WHAT DOES AN ECONOMIST DO?
As an Economist in the Statistics of Income Division (SOI) of RAS
you'll use advanced knowledge of economic and accounting principles
and practices to conduct economic tax studies and formulate, plan,
execute and control projects. Working as part of a team, you'll
select statistical methodology and help design IRS software programs
to construct data files to be used for tax policy and public data
dissemination purposes. You will produce statistical data tables and
write articles about the final data.
WHAT IS THE Internal Revenue Service (IRS)?
The IRS is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and one of the
world's most efficient tax administrators. Yearly, the IRS collects
more than $2 trillion in revenue and processes over 200 million tax
returns. The IRS Mission is to provide the United States taxpayers
top quality service by helping them understand and meet their tax
responsibilities and by applying the tax law with integrity and
fairness to all.
WHAT IS THE RESEARCH, ANALYSIS, & STATISTICS, STATISTICS OF INCOME
DIVISION?
The IRS Research, Analysis & Statistics (RAS), Statistics of Income
Division (SOI) collects, analyzes, and disseminates information on
Federal taxation for the Treasury Department, U.S. Congress, the IRS
in its administration of the tax laws, other organizations engaged in
economic and financial analysis, and for the general public. SOI is
staffed by economists; statisticians; information technology
specialists and mathematical statisticians.
WHAT IS THE APPEALS DIVISION?
Independent by statute and staffed by highly trained professionals,
the Appeals function provides alternative dispute resolution for any
taxpayer contesting IRS compliance actions. Appeals represents the
last opportunity for the IRS and a taxpayer to resolve disputes prior
to litigation, and ensures that all taxpayers can receive an
impartial review of their tax case. This impartial review is
essential to the integrity of the American tax system.
