We are looking for at least two Economists to work either in the Policy Studies Branch or in the Country Studies Branch of the Economics Department. The selected persons will conduct economic analyses of, and draft documents about, policy issues arising in fields covered by the Economics Department (ECO). They will work under the supervision of a Head of Division and/or a Senior Economist within the Department. Those selected to work in the Policy Studies Branch will generally work on projects of a cross-country nature. Those selected for the Country Studies Branch will be required to work on a member country desk, or on a non-member economy desk.
Job Duties 1. Analysis and forecasting • Carry out cross-country or single-country economic analyses of issues of current policy relevance for one or more Committees and/or their Working Parties served by the Department. The topics covered will vary through time according to the Programme of Work defined by the Committee(s) served, and may include both structural and macro-economic issues, in the short or medium term, related to OECD member countries or non-member economies. • Contribute to the semi-annual forecasting round of the Department. Participate in the development and maintenance of the analytical apparatus of the Department by identifying areas in which empirical work is necessary. Contribute to the work done elsewhere in the Department in the relevant areas. 2. Drafting • Draft reports and articles summarising empirical knowledge, recent economic developments of policy issues, either for inclusion in the Department's documentation (Working Papers, Economic Surveys, Economic Outlook, Going for Growth, Economic Studies and Monographs) or for briefing senior officials. • Prepare draft press releases on specific subjects, as required. 3. Liaison • Maintain contacts with officials in national administrations, other international organisations and country Delegations. • Keep informed on economic policy developments in member countries, and on developments in the academic literature. • Participate in missions to member countries or non-member economies, as required. 4. Other tasks • Carry out other related duties as assigned. Qualifications 1. Education and experience • An advanced university degree in economics. • Three to seven years' experience in applied economic research and policy analysis, preferably in areas where international experience and comparisons have been drawn on. 2. Key competencies • Very good, knowledge of micro- and macro-economic theory and of the general techniques of econometrics and statistics. • Familiarity with models and empirical techniques is an advantage. • Knowledge of the economies of one or more member countries. Knowledge of the economies of one or more non-member economies would be an advantage. • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team and to supervise research assistants. • Ability to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines. 3. Communication and OECD official languages • Excellent knowledge of one of the two official languages of the OECD (English and French), including high quality drafting ability in that language. A working knowledge of the other language. • Knowledge of other languages, in particular of non-member economies, would be an advantage. NB. Shortlisted candidates for this vacancy may be required to take a written exercise. The appointments may initially be made at the level immediately below if the qualifications and professional experience of the selected persons correspond to that level; in this case, the duties and responsibilities assigned to the post will be adjusted accordingly. |
