The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international financial institution that promotes central bank cooperation and provides banking services exclusively to central banks. Based in Basel, Switzerland, with representative offices for Asia and the Pacific in Hong Kong SAR and for the Americas in Mexico City, the BIS has staff from some 50 countries.
The BIS seeks to fill the position of Head of Monetary Policy for the BIS headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.
Purpose of the job:
The Monetary Policy unit carries out research and policy analysis in the area of monetary policy as well as exchange rate issues. It contributes to the regular publications of the Monetary and Economic Department (the Annual Report and Quarterly Review); the organisation of meetings of senior central bankers, including the drafting of background notes; and the organisation of workshops and conferences.
In collaboration with the Director of Research and Statistics, define research in the area of monetary policy, and ensure its execution
Define areas of specialisation and allocate resources of the unit
Ensure preparation of chapters of the Annual Report and the unit's contributions to the Quarterly Review
Ensure preparation of ad hoc background documents for meetings of senior central bank officials and Governors, and support BIS Management in area of competence
Carry out research for internal and external publications
Represent the BIS at official meetings, international conferences, etc
Establish, maintain and enhance contacts with central banks, other organisations, academics and the private sector
Job Requirements:
Qualifications
PhD in economics from a university of international standing (or equivalent experience and track record in academia or a central bank/international organisation)
Specialisation in monetary economics and policy
Skills
Ability to identify independently, possibly well ahead of time, policy issues worthy of research and analysis
Ability to ensure that the required analysis and research are carried out effectively
Ability to lead and motivate staff, leading by example
Strong cooperative and team spirit
Excellent verbal and drafting skills in English (knowledge of another major language an advantage)
Work experience
At least 10 years' experience in a central bank or international financial institution, or in academia with considerable exposure to policy questions
Solid research and publication record
Proven experience in leading and coordinating team work
Involvement in policy formulation in the areas covered by the position
