Background CGAP is an independent policy and research center dedicated to advancing financial access for the world's poor. It is supported by over 30 development agencies and private foundations who share a common mission to alleviate poverty. Housed at the World Bank, CGAP provides market intelligence, promotes standards, develops innovative solutions and offers advisory services to governments, microfinance providers, donors, and investors.
Data Research and Analytics work focuses on data collection, analysis and dissemination in the area of access to financial services. As part of this work CGAP conduct a global survey on accessing financial services and publishes a report. The survey gathers statistics on access to finance and use of financial services. The objective of this project is to assist policy makers in devising strategies to stimulate access to finance while ensuring financial system stability and protecting customer rights.
Duties and Accountabilities
A highly motivated Economist is invited to join this dynamic and growing unit, requiring a mix of operational and research skills, a strong knowledge of financial economics and exposure to issues concerning financial access and microfinance.
Duties will include:
• Manage the day-to-day aspects of generating indicators, including guiding and supporting the data collection of research analysts, contractors and vendors. Establish links within countries to collect data, via partners or on a direct basis. Analyze the findings and draft research research or policy papers with multiple potential audiences. Contribute to writing of an annual Financial Access Report, including leading analysis and drafting of select sections of the report.
• Provide guidance on research methodology to other teams in CGAP, contribute to drafting research papers and reports. Design and undertake research projects in collaboration with World Bank staff or external academia on access to financial services.
• Contribute to refining and extending the methodology, already established in the pilot year, towards the construction of standardized indicators on financial access which have global relevance across a diverse group of countries.
• Contribute as needed to general project organization, including marketing, website development, local partner management, report production and team development, presentations to governments, donor agencies, private sector organizations as well as communications with media.
• Working collaboratively and supportively as a team member, guiding the development of the research capabilities of team analysts. Encouraging the development of cross-unit and multi-person tasks.
Selection criteria
• Graduate degree in economics, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in micro level statistical analysis, with household data and/ or financial institution analysis. Good knowledge of STATA and statistical programs for primary data analysis and research, as well as econometric skills for data analysis.
• Understanding of substantive issues in the analysis of financial services and financial institutions.
• Demonstrated interest and experience of issues concerning access to finance, household finance and poverty is highly desirable.
• Strong organizational and oral presentation skills.
• Ability to translate research findings into policy recommendations and support for operational work.
• Enthusiasm for and commitment to development work.
• Proven ability to work in a team.
