The IDS is a leading global institution for research, teaching and communications on international development, based at the University of Sussex. We are seeking to appoint a Fellow to play a leading role in the development of our new Centre on Gender and Development. The Centre, based within our Participation, Power and Social Change research team, will consolidate and further develop IDS research, communications and teaching on gender. The Centre will include a strong policy influencing and knowledge sharing agenda; a DPhil programme; serving as the IDS home for the MA programme in gender and development; working with our academic colleagues in the University of Sussex in relation to our shared teaching and research interests; and maintaining a lively and up to date web site. The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in the Centre’s activities and contribute gender theory and perspectives to the IDS DPhil programme.
Applicants should have an international reputation as a researcher in gender and development in feminist approaches to either anthropology, economics, political science or a related discipline, and an excellent publications record with experience and interest in bridging research with practice and policy. Other essential requirements are leadership skills, a strong track record of fund raising and a demonstrable commitment to participatory values and non-hierarchical ways of working. Candidates should be fluent in written and spoken English and should normally have a PhD in a relevant discipline (although exceptionally, comparable research and practical experience may be taken as a substitute). A demonstrated capacity to work in multidisciplinary teams and with partners from a wide range of countries will also be valued, as will language abilities beyond English. Applications from those with a strong background in postgraduate teaching and convening will be particularly welcome. Salary: £40,853 - £55,000 in the IDS grade 8/9
