An ambitious, forward-thinking institution, the University of Surrey has an international reputation for world-class research in the physical, biomedical and social sciences and the humanities as well as a distinctive excellence in teaching and learning. At the start of 2010, the University is commencing a major campaign to recruit a substantial number of world-leading researchers. Through the provision of strong support and strategic investment behind these posts, the University therefore anticipates that this group of recognised leaders will help articulate, shape and deliver an exceptionally vibrant research agenda for the future. Candidates for all posts are being sought globally, in line with the University's fundamental objective to continue to attain to the very highest levels that it can on the international stage.
The Department of Economics is seeking to appoint an internationally recognised researcher to a Chair in Economics. Candidates must have an excellent research record in the areas of macroeconomic theory, finance, time series econometrics or labour markets and search models. Working at an emerging focal point of contemporary policy debate, the Chair in Economics will take on an important role in our Macroeconomics group. This has a particular focus on micro-founded macroeconomic modelling, the interaction between labour and financial markets, and the development of rules for monetary and fiscal policy. In terms of its critical mass, recent activities, secured funding and collaborative networks, the group is already well-placed to expand and become a leader of its kind in the UK. This appointment will contribute to the University's profile in an important area of international policy. The Department has a reputation for research and teaching built upon a commitment to theoretical and, rigorously founded, applied work. The Economics Department enjoys a strong profile in research and teaching, exemplified by a successful 2008 RAE and 2009 NSS. It has a thriving student community, and houses three highly successful undergraduate degrees, four strong MSc programmes and a buoyant PhD programme.
