Energy Economist

Posted by: Economic and Social Research Institute

Posted date: 19-Jul-2010

Location: Dublin

The Economic Analysis Division of the Economic and Social Research Institute in Dublin undertakes research in a wide range of economic areas, including: Macroeconomics, International Economics, Technology, Innovation and Productivity, Migration, Competition and Regulation, Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, Transport and Infrastructure.

The ESRI has a strong tradition of research in the areas of resource and environmental economics and is now seeking to further develop its work on energy economics and policy.

The work of the Energy Policy Research Centre in the ESRI concentrates on the key policy issues facing decision-makers in Ireland : the impact of environmental regulations on the sector; security of supply; the structure of the market; the effects of interconnection with other markets; the economics of renewable energy and the demand for energy.

Job Specification

The ESRI wishes to recruit an Economist to carry out energy modelling and policy research. Candidates should be familiar with the applied and theoretical literature on regulatory economics and related fields, with the ability to apply economic tools to the current policy issues facing Irish policy-makers in the field of energy. In addition, they must be able to contribute to the wider development of this field through contributions to refereed publications.

The ESRI’s research agenda is determined by taking into account both researchers’ interests and the needs of funding bodies. All research projects undertaken by the ESRI have a significant public good element and results are published without restriction. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with external clients and funding bodies and must be able to effectively communicate complex results to policy-makers who may not be familiar with the underlying theoretical issues.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have:

  • A relevant PhD or equivalent;
  • A strong background in Applied Economics;
  • Strong quantitative skills including proven ability to use current statistical and econometric techniques;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills;
  • Client relationship management skills;
  • Proven ability to work successfully under tight deadlines.

Experience in modelling would be an advantage.
