Shape the success of the UK economy with your innovative analyses

Based in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), you will help form a crucial part of our work. We are responsible for developing and a comprehensive industrial strategy and leading the Government's relationship with business; we work to tackle climate change and ensure that the country has secure energy supplies that are reliable, affordable and clean. Our role is vital to lead the Government's vision in a context of momentous change, responding to both the short-term domestic impact of the UK's withdrawal from the European Union and working to define the next stage. As such we are seeking innovative Economists, Operational Researchers, Social Researchers and Statisticians who will assist with policy making decisions. Seeing the policy through its entire cycle – from option appraisals through to policy evaluations – your findings will help define the success of the UK’s international interactions.

This is an incredibly exciting challenge, with opportunities across various key areas. You’ll also have scope to work on developing the industrial strategy, science and innovation investment, the development of the modern economy, and so much more. Based in the Business and Science Group, the International, Growth & Analysis Group, the Energy & Security Group or the Market Frameworks Group, your findings will therefore shape the success of the UK economy and industry both now and in the future – so these roles really do have the scope to be career-defining.

You will lead the analysis and research in a specific area, providing all of the information, data and models needed to support the policy you are working on. As such, you will have strong analytical experience, with the capability to form excellent working relationships with ministers, policy leads, plus external research stakeholders. If you have experience of policy related analysis, that would be beneficial but isn’t strictly essential. What is essential is that you have the leadership skills needed to manage junior analysts, and the following qualifications relevant to the role you are applying for:

• Economists: A degree (minimum 2:1), incorporating at least 50% economics modules, or a Masters in Economics.
• Operational Researchers: A numerate degree (minimum 2:1, or a 2:2 with relevant work experience or postgraduate qualification), incorporating at least 50% operational research, mathematics, physics, econometrics, engineering, management sciences, or anything relevant.
• Social Researchers: A degree (minimum 2:1) in a relevant social science with a substantial social research component, such as demography, economics, human geography, linguistics, psychology, social anthropology, sociology and statistics; or a degree (minimum 2:2) with a relevant postgraduate qualification in social research.
• Statisticians: A degree (minimum 2:2) in a numerate discipline such as mathematics, economics, psychology or geography (incorporating some formal statistical training); or a postgraduate degree in a subject containing formal statistical training or; or experience to the same level as a foundation degree/HND (Level 5).
