Salary: £71,370 - £77,300 per annum

As the UK faces an unprecedented challenge to the economy, it is vital the CMA is able to provide high-quality economic analysis to inform decisions on competition cases and protect both consumers and businesses. In order to meet this challenge, we are seeking skilled Assistant Directors of Economics to provide the necessary leadership. In addition, as the UK has left the EU, our role has become even more important as the diversity, number, and complexity of the cases we work on has increased, presenting exciting opportunities for accomplished economists to further strengthen our capability in this critical field. The scope of our work is also increasing as the CMA becomes responsible for the Office for the Internal Market and due to its ongoing work in digital markets.

As Assistant Director of Economics, you will work in a collaborative, collegiate atmosphere, with opportunities and the capability for some homeworking, to manage economic input into a diverse case load. This includes investigations into mergers and markets, competition and consumer enforcement cases, and regulatory appeals.

Working flexibly across the full range of projects, you will play a strategic role in the direction of individual projects, determining the key areas for investigation, the economic analysis required and how to gather evidence and mitigate risk. You will lead a team of three to six Economic Advisers and/or Assistant Economists, providing opportunities for staff to develop their skills through coaching and providing constructive feedback. A key aspect of this role is the ability to deliver through others, by constructively assessing work produced by colleagues and by developing the abilities of the economists you work with.

To be successful in this role, you must have substantial proven competence as a professional economist (ideally in competition economics, or at least in a closely related area of applied economics), including work experience in the economic analysis of markets. You will also need to demonstrate substantial experience of leading and managing teams in the design, development, management and timely delivery of economic projects and project analysis.

The CMA is a hugely rewarding, diverse and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so.

In return we offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee well-assistance programme and favourable consideration of flexible working.
