S: £71,370 - £77,300 per annum

Location: London / Edinburgh / Cardiff / Belfast / Manchester
Salary: £71,370 – £77,300 per annum
Hours: Full time / Part time / Flexible
Contract: Permanent

As the UK faces an unprecedented challenge to the economy, it is vital that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is able to provide high-quality economic analysis to inform decisions on competition cases and protect both consumers and businesses.

The scope of our work is also increasing as the CMA becomes responsible for the Office for the Internal Market. The Office for the Internal Market has been established to support the effective operation of the UK's internal market by providing economic and technical reporting and monitoring. We are now looking for a highly experienced economist and leader to play a pivotal role leading the economics input into the Office for the Internal Market's work.

As Assistant Director, Economics you will be responsible for leading a team of economists in delivering economic analysis, assuring the quality of that analysis, and managing economic risks on Office for the Internal Market projects. In particular, you will be the lead expert on trade analysis, leading the analytical team on annual monitoring reports and providing expert advice to analytical teams and reports to the UK and Devolved Governments.

Leading by example, you will be expected to contribute to the management and intellectual development of your team of economists, providing constructive feedback on their work and developing their abilities accordingly.

You will also be required to establish relationships of influence with both internal and external stakeholders – particularly the UK Government and Devolved Governments – when representing the CMA externally.

You will need substantial experience as a professional economist (ideally in economics relating to international trade, or in an area of applied economics that involves the economic analysis of markets), including practical work experience in empirical analysis. Experience of leading and managing teams in the delivery of economic projects and analysis is equally important.

Further information on the OIM's role (including a short introductory video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibHtuEqSZMI) can be found on our website https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/office-for-the-internal-market.

In return the CMA is a hugely diverse, rewarding and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee assistance programme and flexible working options.
