Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)
London or Edinburgh - United Kingdom
S: £68,926 - £77,300

Location: London or Edinburgh
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full time

Salary: £68,926 - £77,300

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the UK's main competition and consumer authority, is undergoing rapid business expansion. As the UK leaves the EU, our role will become even more important as the diversity, number and complexity of the cases we work on increases, presenting exciting opportunities for accomplished economists to further strengthen our capability in this critical field.

Economics is at the heart of everything we do; we tackle high-profile cases, analyse potential harm to competition, champion the consumer and offer intellectual leadership. As Assistant Directors of Economics, you will join a strong international team of economists, working in a collaborative, collegiate atmosphere to manage economic input into a diverse case load, including investigations into mergers and markets, competition and consumer enforcement cases, and regulatory appeals.

Working flexibly across the full range of projects, you will play a strategic role in the direction of individual projects, determining the key areas for investigation, the economic analysis required and how to gather evidence and mitigate risk. You will also have opportunities to coach and develop others, and ensure that the team delivers consistently outstanding economic analysis and insight. It's an environment with autonomy, responsibility and direct access to key decision makers.

About you
A qualified economics professional, you will bring to this role a strong microeconomics and/or quantitative focus, with an in-depth understanding of industrial organisation and competition economics. Substantial experience in competition economics (or in a closely related area of applied economics) is vital, during which time you've already proven that you can lead teams, manage stakeholder relationships and present technical economic analysis in a way that engages, informs and drives decision-making. Practical work experience in the economic analysis of markets is also essential and will round off your profile.

In return, the CMA offers you a rewarding, stimulating and inclusive place to work. In addition to our standard Civil Service Benefits (notably generous leave and pension), we champion a culture that respects your work-life balance, offer training tailored to maximise your potential, and offer genuine opportunities for career progression.

The CMA is an accredited Disability Confident Employer and are Stonewall Diversity Champions. Disabled applicants meeting the minimum criteria for the job will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities at an interview. As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds and recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles.
