Assistant Environmental Economist (24202BR)
London, Bristol or Edinburgh

Role Overview

The Environmental Policy and Economics Team at Amec Foster Wheeler advises the European Commission, national governments, multinational organisations, funding organisations and trade associations on the development and implementation of environmental policy. Our projects help to directly influence the development and implementation of environmental policy in the UK, EU and beyond. We are trusted for our impartial, objective and robust analysis.

Our team draws on experience and global presence across the engineering and environmental services sectors. We regularly cover work on air quality, industrial emissions, chemicals, water, climate change, energy, transport, waste and resources. We also provide socio-economic analysis to support major infrastructure projects, master planning and commercial planning applications.

We are looking for an Assistant Consultant with strong qualifications and skills in economics to support the development of environmental policy and contribute to Amec Foster Wheeler's continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

Economic analysis is a critical component of the services we provide. You will be involved in policy impact assessments for Government, requiring skills in cost-benefit analysis, socio-economic analysis, feasibility assessment and evaluation. Commercial work requires strong policy and numerical analysis skills and the use of customised assessment tools to support companies' strategic response to emerging policies.

We expect you to understand the processes for development of public policy and the methods for assessing the economic and other impacts of government action, including the interaction between the public and private sectors, the scope for government intervention and the operation of regulated markets.

Your work will require you to:

Develop research and analysis of the social and (micro and macro) economic impact of environmental legislation and regulation, the cost and feasibility of technical solutions to environmental policy and the response of commercial companies to the challenges posed.
Represent and analyse uncertainties of different types, for example through sensitivity analysis or options appraisal.
Confidently present your work to clients, stakeholders and team members.
Write accurate and clear reports.
Use and develop spreadsheet models to analyse the socio-economic impacts of policies.

You will work in multi-disciplinary teams with clients and colleagues in the UK and overseas within a genuinely supportive and friendly environment, but with the resources of an organisation employing 40,000 people across the globe.

Role Requirements
A keen interest in developing a career in environmental economics and public policy.
Degree-level qualification in economics and ideally also a postgraduate qualification in environmental economics. Knowledge of environmental science or public policy would be an additional benefit, but is not essential.
Demonstrable experience in analytical economic techniques such as: survey design and execution; quantitative methods; market analysis; socio-economic analysis; cost-benefit analysis and regulatory impact assessment.
Familiarity with national and international sources of government and business statistics; interpretation and use of data including spreadsheet modelling.
Some knowledge of at least one of following policy areas and the commercial sectors affected: air quality, industrial emissions, chemicals, water, climate change, energy, transport, waste and resources.
Post graduate experience is not essential, but some experience in environmental consultancy, government, or academic research would be an asset.
Excellent communication skills and ability to write concise reports in English.
Knowledge of other EU languages would be beneficial.
