Associate/Assistant Professor

CERGE-EI Economics logo

CERGE-EI
Prague - Czech Republic
S: Western European levels

Buoyed by a recent series of outstanding additions to the faculty in the fields of macroeconomics, game theory, behavioral economics, and quantitative finance, CERGE-EI is seeking to solidify its position as the best academic institution in economics in Central and Eastern Europe by making further appointments in the areas of empirical microeconomics and econometrics.

We are looking for a senior faculty member with tenure or a younger researcher with an established publication record. We are also seeking to fill an entry-level tenure-track position. Preference will be given to candidates in empirical microeconomics (any subfield), finance, and econometrics, but outstanding candidates from other fields of economics will be considered. The senior appointment may be considered for the Vaclav Havel Chair in Political Economy, depending on field.

CERGE-EI, designated a Center of Excellence by USAID (http://www.cerge-ei.cz) and located in the historical center of Prague, enters its third decade as a unique combination of an economic research center and a U.S. chartered Ph.D. program in economics teaching mostly students from post-communist countries. We also run a Masters-level program, send our students to teach undergraduate courses in economics in English throughout the CEE and FSU regions, and serve as a regional hub for the Global Development Network. Teaching loads are light and the research environment in this dynamically developing institution is excellent, including over 50 seminars a year and a state-of-the-art library. Salary, including performance-based supplements and publication bonuses, equals, on average, academic salaries in Western Europe. Ample vacation time and the possibility of spending up to one semester a year on full pay visiting other departments complement our offer.

CERGE-EI ranks close to the 5th percentile in both the SSRN and RePEc rankings of economics departments, and our alumni regularly find positions with international organizations (IMF, WB, EBRD, OECD, Bank of Canada) as well as tenure-track positions at high-quality institutions (University of Tilburg, University of Iowa, Northwestern University, University of Vienna). Tenure and hiring decisions are processed by an international advisory board including such prominent economists as Joseph Stiglitz, Alan Krueger, John Sutton, and Philippe Aghion.

Candidates are expected to have publications in leading scholarly journals, or, if just completing their Ph.D. degree, the ability to achieve such a record. No language or citizenship requirements other than fluency in English. To apply for a junior position, send a letter of interest, CV, sample(s) of written and published work, and three letters of recommendation to fs@cerge-ei.cz before December 15, 2011. Interviews will be scheduled at the ASSA meetings in Chicago or in Prague.

For more information or informal inquiries about the senior position, contact Dr. Sergey Slobodyan at Sergey.Slobodyan@cerge-ei.cz or +420 224 005 211.
