Chair in Economics

Job Purpose
Those appointed to these Chairs in Economics will be expected to undertake and promote world-class research and to provide leadership witin the department.
 
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To provide research leadership in the Department by conributing to the area of Finance/Financial/Economics/Financial Econometrics or Macroeconomics, and to contribute actively to enhancing the Department's research profile in future national research assessments.

2. To sustain high –quality research activity through a portfolio of individual, joint and/or network research projects, and to seek funding for the same through grant applications to Research Councils etc.

3. To encourage research students of high calibre to undertake doctoral research in the department and to supervise them to completion.

4. To provide research direction for more junior staff in the Department and, where possible, engage in collaborative research, thereby promoting the development of its research base.


5. To take a leading role in the design and delivery of postgraduate programmes and courses (including new research-led programmes and courses).

6. To undertake such teaching, supervision, and assessment duties as the Head of Department assigns

7. To act in a senior role within the Department in administrative and other activities as directed by the Head of Department, including mentoring of junior staff, in accordance with the departmental programme and objectives.

8. To represent the Department/Faculty/University in external activities and events as required.

9. To foster an atmosphere of collegiality.
 
10. To develop links with the economics profession, with relevant national and international governmental and regulatory organisations and with thepolicy community in general with a view to enhance the Department's profile.

11. To engage in professional development as appropriate.

12. To foster collaboration in research and teaching with other units of the University.

13. To manage projects and bring them in on time and on budget.

14. To contribute to the management of the department and show academic leadership in implementing and/or influencing University policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
EDUCATION/ PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:
A1. A PhD awarded in Economics or Financial Economics or Finance, or equivalent experience.

Desirable:
B1. Qualifications (or research experience) in economics.

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Essential:
C1. Have demonstrated academic leadership in research, teaching and management.
C2. Ability to integrate into an established department.
C3. Ability to demonstrate the potential to establish, lead, and maintain a research group, either autonomously or in collaboration with others in a department.
C4 Ability to communicate with others effectively.
C5 Ability to foster collegiality.
C6 Special interest in macroeconomics and / or financial economics and econometrics.
C7 Excellent international research profile.
C8 Clear future research plans relevant to the programme 3 stated in SIRE.
C9 Special interest in supervising PhD students.

Desirable:
D1 Interest in the research areas of strength in the Department.
D2 Demonstrate a genuine interest in providing research leadership. 
D3 Potential to foster collaboration in research with other Departments in the Faculty of Law, Business and Social Sciences, and in cognate Faculties.
