Chief U.K. Economist

Pantheon Macroeconomics Ltd
Newcastle upon Tyne - United Kingdom
S: Negotiable

Job Description

Pantheon Macroeconomics seeks a Chief UK Economist to establish a new product and build a practice serving the company's substantial global client base, which includes major international banks, asset managers, and hedge funds. This is a prime opportunity to step out of the bureaucratic confines of economist roles in investment banking or asset management and make a name for yourself in the markets and media.

Initially, you will be solely responsible for producing a daily note on the UK economy, covering both the key short-term data and the broader themes, with a particular focus on monetary policy. You will also prepare brief notes for clients, released immediately after major data releases and policy events, evaluating the information flow with respect to both your forecasts and the consensus view.

Based in our office in Newcastle, UK, you will need to build relationships with clients around the world, so significant travel will be an essential element of the job. While travelling, you will need to continue producing your research, so you need to be organized, flexible and adaptable.

The world of independent economic research is very different from the institutional environment. You need to be willing to take clear positions, which may differ substantially from the consensus, and to defend them. Your writing must be fluent, clear, concise and provocative, and supported by data. You need to be (nearly) as interested in building a successful business as you are in economics. If you want to write 40-page reports full of equations and footnotes, this is not the job for you.

Initial interviews will be held in London or via Skype.

Job Requirements

At least five years’ experience covering the UK economy, preferably in a deadline-driven private sector environment, though exceptional candidates currently in the public sector will be considered. New graduates will not be considered. If you have no experience covering the UK economic data flow, please don't waste your time or ours by applying for this position.

A first degree in Economics or Economics with a finance/banking/accounting minor, though a higher degree is preferred.

Citizenship of an EU country or permanent legal permission to live and work in the UK.

Fluency in oral and written English. You will be expected to make media appearances.

Excellent presentation skills.
