Job description and key responsibilities

We are currently recruiting London based staff at managing consultant, senior consultant and consultant levels to join Maxwell Stamp's Economic Policy and Strategy (EPS) practice centre. The EPS practice centre is organised according to the following specialisms:

Economic policy development:
Private sector development policy and inclusive economic development
Business regulation and enabling environment reform
Industrial policy
Competition policy

Market/enterprise development
Private sector and enterprise development and competitiveness
Business development services
Value chain and market systems development
Investment promotion

Trade development
International trade
Regional integration
Trade facilitation
Export promotion

We are looking for individuals to support the growth of our business in each of these three areas. Key responsibilities for each position are set out below, but all members of the EPS practice centre team are responsible for business development and supporting the implementation of projects in one or another of these specialist areas. All positions will involve travel to developing countries.

Managing Consultant -
Business development strategy and execution

- Contributing to the practice area business development strategy, monitoring development market trends
- Overseeing the development of marketing materials and leading business development missions which advance the positioning of Maxwell Stamp and build relationships with potential clients
- Contributing to and leading proactive sales initiatives
- Contributing conceptually and technically to the development of new techniques and approaches relevant to the practice
- Contributing to overall management and development of MSP by undertaking special projects, generating new ideas and by being innovative, creative and proactive

Expressions of interest and proposals
-Secure invitations to tender through the submission of successful expressions of interest, either solicited through advertisements, or offered as the result of proactive contact
- Lead the preparation of technical and financial proposals for consultancy assignments
- Lead the negotiation of consultancy contracts
- Contributing to and leading proposal planning meetings
- Leading and undertaking pre proposal missions

Senior Consultant -
Business development strategy and execution

- Contributing to the practice area business development strategy, monitoring development market trends
- Overseeing the development of marketing materials and leading business development missions which advance the positioning of Maxwell Stamp and build relationships with potential clients
- Contributing to and leading proactive sales initiatives
- Contributing conceptually and technically to the development of new techniques and approaches relevant to the practice
- Contributing to overall management and development of MSP by undertaking special projects, generating new ideas and by being innovative, creative and proactive

Expressions of interest and proposals
- Monitoring project leads and taking responsibility for the preparation of expressions of interest for short listings to donor agencies
- Acting as bid manager
- Participating in and contributing and written sections ideas to technical and financial proposals
- Helping prepare and undertake proposal fact finding missions
- Researching costs, negotiating subcontractor and freelance consultant fees, and preparing draft financial proposals

Consultant -
Business development strategy and execution

- Contributing to the practice area business development strategy, monitoring development market trends
- Developing marketing materials and undertaking marketing trips
- Contributing technically to the development of new techniques and approaches relevant to the practice

Expressions of interest and proposals
- Monitoring project leads, contributing to and/or taking responsibility for the preparation of expressions of interest for short listings to donor agencies
- participating in proposal planning meetings and liaison with consortium partners
-Helping prepare and undertake proposal fact finding missions
-Helping prepare sections of technical proposals with guidance from senior practice staff

Desired skills and experience

We are looking for candidates with varying degrees of professional experience in international economic development (2-5 years for consultants, 5+ years for the senior consultants, 10+ years for managing consultants). Typically we are looking for candidates who:
Have a broad knowledge of international development issues and hold a relevant postgraduate degree;
Have professional experience in one or more fields relevant to MSP practice to a level commensurate with the position;
Are able to relate economic development theory to practical situations and communicate complex technical issues in a straightforward manner to non-specialists;
Have a successful track record working on business development and/or implementation of projects financed by international development agencies;
Can write clearly, concisely and interestingly and are numerate with at least a basic understanding of statistics/econometrics; and
Are able to communicate effectively in small and larger groups and in more formal oral presentations.
