Data Scientist

Position Description:

The Data Scientist will draw insights from large data sets (e.g. 10^6 to 10^8 records) to help management make more informed decisions. He/she will develop algorithms to join and transform databases from multiple sources, summarize what the data say, and be able to convey the technical findings to a broad audience, answering strategic business questions one day and discovering ways to optimize eBook prices the next.

Major Responsibilities:

• Frame and conduct ad hoc statistical analyses with sales data in a way that can be quickly updated
• Design and implement eBook price experiments to determine the price elasticity of demand across relevant segments and genres
• Circulate to senior management and other stakeholders regular sales reports and pricing actions
• Work closely with the sales and marketing departments to use data to drive eBook promotional activities
• Work closely with the data warehouse group to ensure that the data within the reporting suite is sufficient to perform these tasks

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Extremely strong analytical skills
• Knowledge of relevant software packages:
o Statistical programming (e.g., Stata, R, SAS)
o Database (e.g., SQL, Cognos)
o Excel
• Good written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences

Experience Needed:

• 5-10 years of work experience conducting data-driven analyses:
o Experience analyzing and communicating statistical analyses required
o Experience making pricing decisions preferred
• Publishing experience a plus

Educational Background Required:

• Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., economics, econometrics, statistics, finance, the sciences) required. Advanced degree a plus
