Department Head - Agricultural and Resource Economics

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) embodies excellence in research, teaching and extension in the area of agriculture and the economics of natural resources and the environment. Dedicated, student-focused faculty teach diverse courses and nurture industry connections to help students pursue rewarding careers. Researchers engage students in relevant, applied research. Extension specialists conduct research-based activities that benefit local and global communities.

ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree and a Masters of Economics degree, and a Ph.D. degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties
This position is intended for current and permanent employees of NC State University.

The Head of the Department must provide intellectual and organizational leadership and effective management to academic, research, and extension programs in a dynamic department with a strong reputation for excellence. The Head will create an environment that facilitates an effective shared vision, a highly productive, innovative, entrepreneurial, and collegial faculty and staff, collaborative opportunities, and a mutually supportive, diverse and intellectually stimulating environment for faculty, staff, and students. As the Department's academic leader and administrative officer, this position will lead faculty and staff in implementing and enhancing the undergraduate and graduate programs, cooperative extension and outreach activities to ensure that the programs remain responsive to the evolving needs of students and stakeholders. The Head will administer and manage the Department's academic affairs, personnel, finances, and physical facilities. This position will also represent, promote and advocate for the Department within the College and the University, interact with alumni and other private and public stakeholders, and assist in attracting external support for educational programs, research initiatives and centers, as well as cooperative extension. This is a 12-month position.

Minimum Education/Experience
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or a related field, as well as relevant administrative experience.
Should be a tenured professor at NC State University.

Candidates should have a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the ability to support and mentor faculty and staff at all career stages.
Demonstrated ability to manage budget priorities to balance a diverse array of needs within the Department.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Demonstrated ability for highly effective administrative leadership and management of a multi-function department, and an understanding and appreciation of the evolving mission of the land-grant university system. This includes an understanding of the opportunities and constraints facing faculty and departments in public research and education institutions.
Experience with personnel management and participatory decision-making.
