In a post-EU world, our trade and investment statistics have never been more important.I am delighted that you are interested in joining our team as Deputy Director of Global Trade and Investment (GTI), Deputy Director of Public Sector or Deputy Director of Economic and Microdata Insights in the Macroeconomic & Environment Statistics and Analysis Directorate, part of the Economic Statistics & Environment Group.

We are seeking inspirational leaders and creative problem solvers, with strong analytical and strategic skills, demonstrated experience in senior stakeholder engagement, and team players who can work with colleagues within and outside of ONS to succeed.

Deputy Director, Public Sector Division

The Public Sector (PS) Division employs between 80 and 100 staff, and is part of the Macroeconomic and Environment Statistics and Analysis (MESA) Directorate.

The Division produces the monthly Public Sector Finances release and plays a key role in the production of UK GDP statistics: estimating the contribution of government and other public services to the National Accounts. The division is responsible the Economic Statistics Classification process and so plays an important, cross-cutting role ensuring that economic developments are appropriate and consistent treatment across ONS. The division is also responsible for a number of international statistical transmissions to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Public Sector Division is also undertaking an ambitious and considerable transformation programme during this Spending Review period (to 2024-25). This includes a significant investment in our IT systems, work to deliver new and more granular fiscal statistics and research to examine the feasibility of using administrative data to improve the quality of our outputs. The Division is actively collaborating with the Data Science Campus and Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC); it has seconded staff to HM Treasury and is working closely with internal colleagues in ONS' Digital Services and Technology and Business Architecture divisions.

Deputy Director, Global Trade and Investment Division

The Global Trade and Investment (GTI) Division employs around 70 staff and is part of the Macroeconomic and Environment Statistics and Analysis (MESA) Directorate.

The division is responsible for the UK's international economic statistics, covering both the regular production of statistical outputs to the highest standards at the same time as a programme of work to improve the underlying methods used in producing them. Alongside this the division works closely with other government departments as well as external stakeholders to produce analysis and insights into what is driving trends in the UK's patterns of trade and international investment.

The Division produce the monthly UK Trade release, the quarterly Balance of Payments release, the annual Pink Book and a range of other data, statistics and analysis including on Foreign Direct Investment. The team also contributes to the production of the wider National Accounts.

Deputy Director, Economic and Microdata Insights Division

The Economic and Microdata Insights (EMI) Division employs around 100 staff, and is part of the Macroeconomic and Environment Statistics and Analysis (MESA) Directorate. You will be responsible for the following teams:

Economic and Cross-Cutting Analysis: Providing analysis on prices and the labour market, as well as rapid response and cross-cutting economic analysis and briefing, as part of the ONS Analytical Hub.
Economic Insights Unit: Analysis of key economic issues and macroeconomic trends, briefing the Chief Economist and ONS Senor Leadership Team.
Real-time Microdata Research: Development and analysis of financial transactions microdata to provide real time insights and indicators.
Economic Microdata Transformation: Developing granular and integrated economic and business microdata, and using administrative data to improve our economic statistics.
