The Milken Institute is looking for an experienced economist who has strong experience both writing and collaborating in the field of regional economics. This role will act as a lead author and subject matter expert for the Institute on several high profile key issues. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in regional economics, including issues of regional competitiveness, human capital development, and effective economic development policy at the city and state level. The candidate should have experience and confidence in effectively communicating complex concepts to figures in both the business and policy communities. He or she will have experience initiating, designing, conducting, writing and coordinating, in-depth independent quantitative and qualitative economic research. The ideal candidate will have relevant experience in regional economics and related fields with direct experience in econometric modeling and statistics. He or she should ideally have a focus on regional and/or urban economics, including such areas as knowledge-based economic development, labor economics, and public policy. This role will report to the Executive Director of Regional Economics.

Responsibilities:
Lead new and established reports and initiatives in regional economic research focused on areas of technology-based economic development, human capital development, and regional competitiveness.
Develop research agenda in collaboration with executive director for regional economics research team and manage implementation of projects.
Provide oversight, mentoring and direction to in depth research by the center, including editing and review of work by junior staff, and guiding the professional development of their skill sets.
Develop and act as the principal author on innovative regional economic research intended to inform and impact policy leaders on a regional, state, national and even international level.
Analyze data and model economic outcomes to support primary research, and translate those outcomes into both research papers and public presentations.
Publicly speak on main areas of specialization at Milken Institute conferences and summits, as well as engage with media and policy leaders on areas directly covered by the research.
Requirements:
Experience in fields relevant to regional economics, such as academia, private sector work, and at think tanks.
PhD degree in economics required with expertise in relevant areas, particularly labor economics, regional economic development, and technology-based development.
Strong econometrics and data modeling skills required, along with the ability to effectively convey findings both in written and spoken communications to a non-academic audience.
Clear and concise writer, with experience making presentations to senior officials in the public and private sector.
Prior experience managing a team on research projects and serving as a lead author on high-quality written output.
The ability to develop relationships with peers and stakeholders outside of the Institute.
