The Competition and Markets Authority is undergoing an exciting expansion and increasing its presence with the establishment and creation of new offices and a Microeconomics Unit in Darlington.

As a result of this expansion, we are seeking experienced Econometrics Advisers to play a key role working across the full range of projects that the Microeconomics Unit carries out.

About the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA)

The CMA is the UK's National Competition Authority and an independent non-ministerial department.

The recent increase in our workload after EU Exit and the establishment of our new functions means that the economics group at the CMA will continue to grow over the next few years.

The role

Economics and quantitative analysis is at the heart of the CMA's mission and you will be joining a thriving and growing economics group of around 130 economists, econometricians, data scientists and statisticians.

You will be responsible for carrying out and/or supervising quantitative analysis relevant to a variety of projects. This will include identifying key quantitative issues and concerns, designing and conducting analysis, drawing conclusions and presenting them to colleagues and decision makers.

The main projects that you will be working on initially with the Microeconomics Unit will include:

• The annual State of UK Competition report
• Research into supply-side reforms aimed at improving UK productivity
• The annual Positive Impact report
• The CMA's ongoing programme of ex post studies into past competition policy interventions

Key responsibilities will include:

• Working with the Assistant Director of Econometrics to determine the key areas for investigation and the quantitative analysis required to assess them
• Planning and managing the delivery of quantitative analysis on projects or workstreams
• Ensuring that quantitative analysis is delivered to a high standard
• Contributing to the management and intellectual development of the team of professional Economists

To be considered for this position, you will require:

• A post-graduate degree, ideally, or at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree in economics with a focus on quantitative analysis
• Substantial proven experience in the application of a range of econometrics techniques in applied microeconomics analysis
• Experience of the design, development, management and timely delivery of quantitative analysis to tight deadlines
• Proven ability to communicate and present technical and complex economic analysis to non-technical audiences, both orally and in writing

The CMA prides itself on being a great place to work and strives to ensure that staff can grow and develop their skills. As well as being in a hugely rewarding, diverse and stimulating environment, you will have an opportunity to work for the public good whilst stretching and developing yourself in doing so.

We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, 25 days leave (increasing to 30 days over five years) and generous maternity/paternity leave provision, plus interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme and favourable consideration of flexible working.
