Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)
London, Edinburgh, Belfast or Cardiff - United Kingdom
S: £53,527 - £60,599 per annum

Location: London, Edinburgh, Belfast or Cardiff
Salary: £53,527 - £60,599 per annum
Hours: Full time / Part time / Flexible
Contract: Permanent

The CMA is an independent non-ministerial UK government department and is the UK's principal competition and consumer protection authority. Our statutory duty is to promote competition, both within and outside the UK, for the benefit of consumers, and our mission is to make markets work well in the interests of consumers, businesses and the economy. The CMA is a hugely rewarding, diverse and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so.

The CMA is establishing the Subsidy Advice Unit (SAU), a newly created unit which presents exciting career opportunities for economists to join multi-disciplinary teams working in a fast-paced environment.

The SAU forms part of a new domestic regime for subsidy control, replacing EU State aid rules post-EU exit. The SAU will provide expert and impartial advice to public authorities on referral of complex and high-value subsidies and will monitor and report on the effective operation of the UK subsidy control regime.

At the CMA economics is at the heart of everything we do. As an Economic Adviser, you will take responsibility for shaping, carrying out and communicating high quality economic input to ensure the SAU produces robust advice and reports. This will include considering the policy and economic rationale for specific subsidies; considering aspects of subsidy design and their potential market impacts on competition, trade, and investment; critically assessing the choice and use of economic evidence submitted by public authorities to the SAU; and drawing conclusions and presenting them to senior colleagues.

Although the post holder will primarily work on SAU projects, there will also be opportunities, depending on the skills and preferences of the successful candidate, to also work across the other types of projects the CMA undertakes. This includes investigations into mergers and markets, competition and consumer enforcement cases, and regulatory appeals, as well as the work the CMA will undertake as part of its new responsibility for the Office for the Internal Market and its ongoing work in digital markets.

We are looking for high calibre economists with practical work experience in the economic analysis of markets or applied microeconomics. A good understanding of state aid, subsidy control or policy appraisal will be an advantage. The ability to write clearly and to present to non-technical audiences in a way that engages, informs, and drives decision-making, is essential.

If you're looking for a role that combines intellectual challenge with excellent opportunities for career development, we'd like to hear from you.

The CMA prides itself on being a great place to work and strives to ensure that staff have the opportunity to grow and expand their skills portfolio.

All CMA staff enjoy generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days' leave (increasing to 30 over five years), favourable consideration of flexible working, and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme and our employee well-assistance programme.
