Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Special Unit on Commodities (SUC) at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. The Economics Affairs Officer works under the general guidance of the Head of the SUC and reports directly to the Chief of the Commodities Policy Implementation and Outreach Section (CPIOS).

Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Head of the SUC and the direct supervision of the Chief of the CPIOS, the Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Economic or sector analysis:
•Monitors economic developments in commodity markets and identifies recurrent and emerging issues of concern to the United Nations.
•Designs and conducts studies on issues relating to production of and trade in commodities and their developmental implications and draft resulting reports.
•Provide substantive inputs for reports prepared by the SUC.
•Formulates draft proposals and recommendations for commodity-sector development policies, strategies and measures at global, regional, national and sectoral levels, for consideration by intergovernmental forums, regional and national policy makers, and industry practitioners.
•Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions. Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on commodity and development issues for government officials as well as experts and private sector practitioners.
•Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.

Intergovernmental support:
•Provides substantive support on commodity and development issues to intergovernmental bodies, particularly UNCTAD's Expert Meetings and the Trade and Development Board.
•Represents UNCTAD at international, regional and national meetings on subjects within the work programme of the SUC. Coordinates with various commodity-related stakeholders and hold consultations with them on issues related to SUC work.

Technical cooperation:
•Designs and monitors technical cooperation projects.
•Drafts technical cooperation project proposals.
•Undertakes missions to member states, either alone or as a participant in a diverse team, as part of the UNCTAD's technical cooperation activities.
•Prepares global, regional, national or sector analyses that provide a basis for advising national governments on commodity-related development issues.
•Conducts training seminars and workshops for government officials and others, including preparation and effective presentation of course materials.
•Formulates technical modalities for the evaluation of individual technical cooperation projects.

General:
•Supports junior staff, reviewing their work and providing feedback.
•Participates in intra- and inter-Departmental undertakings of broader concern to represent the views or interests of UNCTAD.
•Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of SUC's work programme.
•Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in economics or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area. Experience in commodity related developmental issues and policies in structural transformation in developing countries is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
