This position is located in the Global Economic Monitoring Unit of the Development Policy and Analysis Division (DPAD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Division is mandated to provide strategic / policy support to Member States in the areas of macroeconomic policies.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Unit of the Development Policy and Analysis Division (DPAD), the incumbent:

• Provides substantive inputs to the UN's annual flagship publication of World Economic Situation and Prospects and its updates, related to the analysis of global macroeconomic trends and prospects and policy implications.
• Conducts studies of selected macroeconomic and development issues as inputs to official reports, policy briefs and other publications prepared by the Division.
• Works on econometric models for a group of countries and uses the models for producing forecasts and policy analysis.
• Drafts recommendations pertaining to macroeconomic and development policy issues of concern to the United Nations and formulates proposals for development strategies, policy and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others.
• Assists the Chief of the Unit and Director of the division in special studies undertaken under the mandate of the Office.
• Prepares briefing notes and other inputs for the Secretary-General and other UN senior officials for a variety of presentations and meetings.
• Makes presentations at expert group meetings and more broadly contributes to the dissemination of the analysis undertaken by the unit.
• Contributes to the maintenance and updating of the division's global modelling frameworks and the related macroeconomic forecast and policy scenario analysis.
• Contributes to the capacity development activities of the Division related to macroeconomic policies.
• Supervises junior staff, by reviewing their work and providing feedback.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in macroeconomics, international economics, development economics or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area. Experience involving the application of principles and concepts of economics in national or international economic policy-making, academia and/or foreign assistance programmes is required. Experience with the use of economic modelling for forecasting and policy analysis is required. A record of international publications, including policy-oriented papers, academic articles, and/or books, in the relevant field of expertise is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
