Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)
London or Edinburgh - United Kingdom
S: £52,736 – £59,868 pa

Location: London or Edinburgh
Salary: £52,736 – £59,868 pa
Hours: Flexible working, Full-time, Part-time
Contract: Permanent

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK's main competition and consumer authority. As the UK leaves the EU, our role will become even more important as the diversity, number and complexity of the cases we work on increases, presenting exciting opportunities for skilled economists to further strengthen our capability in this critical field.

Economics is at the heart of everything we do; we tackle high-profile cases, analyse potential harm to competition, champion the consumer and offer intellectual leadership. As an Economic Adviser, you will join a strong international team of economists, working in a collaborative, collegiate atmosphere to manage economic input into a diverse case load, including investigations into mergers and markets, competition and consumer enforcement cases, and regulatory appeals. Recent cases in which economists played a critical role include the Deliveroo/Amazon merger inquiry and the competition enforcement investigation into agreements between airlines.

Working flexibly across the full range of our projects, you will be the lead economist on some cases, and lead on a particular area of analysis in more complex cases. You will be responsible for carrying out and/or supervising economic analysis relevant to the project, including presenting results and providing economic advice to colleagues across different professions and decision makers. You will have opportunities to manage and develop others, and to contribute to the development of the CMA's economics capability. It's an environment with autonomy, responsibility and direct access to key decision makers.

We are looking for high calibre economists with practical work experience in the economic analysis of markets or applied microeconomics, and a good understanding of industrial organisation and competition economics. The ability to write clearly and to present to non-technical audiences in a way that engages, informs and drives decision-making, is essential.

If you're looking for a role that combines intellectual challenge with excellent opportunities for career development, we'd like to hear from you.

All CMA staff enjoy generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days' leave (increasing to 30 over five years), favourable consideration of flexible working, and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme and our employee assistance programme. We are looking for applicants to be based from either our London or Edinburgh offices. CMA staff in both offices work together in an integrated way across the full range of projects.

The CMA may require you to work from home to continue delivering our objectives during the Covid-19 pandemic period. Any remote or home working arrangement is temporary only, and does not constitute a permanent change to your designated place of work or working conditions.
