The Competition and Markets Authority
London - United Kingdom
S: £48,000 - £57,600

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK's main competition and consumer authority. Our work is high profile and challenging, providing the opportunity to have a real impact on consumers and businesses in the UK.

We are looking for talented economists to join our team. As an economist at the CMA you will work closely with other economists and colleagues from other professions, applying economics to complex, real world issues. You will have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of projects covering all sectors of the economy – for example, you might be investigating mergers which could restrict competition, analysing markets for competition or consumer concerns, or assessing whether a firm has illegally abused a dominant position. Recent CMA cases have ranged from large-scale investigations of the energy and banking markets, to merger cases involving hospitals, retailers and telecoms companies.

As an Economic Adviser, you can expect to plan and lead areas of analysis within cases, including managing the work of other economists. We are looking for people with very strong microeconomic skills and substantial experience of working as a professional economist, ideally with practical work experience in competition economics or a related area. You'll be passionate about your work, taking pride in a thorough and diligent approach and keen to develop your experience and take on more responsibility. Strong communication skills will be important, especially the ability to present economic analysis to non-technical audiences, whether that be in writing or in person.

We will provide a range of opportunities to develop your economic expertise including training courses, lunchtime seminars and discussion groups on economics topics. We will also support and encourage you to develop your wider skills – including communications, drafting, management skills and project management.

All CMA staff enjoy generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days' leave (increasing to 30 days over five years), favourable consideration of flexible working, and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of childcare vouchers, interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme and our employee wellbeing programme. Full details of our terms and conditions are published alongside each vacancy on our website.
