Economist - Fixed Income

Description UBS Global Asset Management is looking to appoint a senior fixed income research analyst to join the economics team within fixed income, which provides support to the fixed income strategy setting process through a forward looking analysis of economic, monetary and credit conditions in the major world economies. The scope of the research would also encompass an analysis of the structural and/or behavioural factors that impact on fixed income markets.

UBS is looking for a senior researcher who will be reporting to the Senior Research Analyst (Economics). To be effective in this role, the candidate will some proven experience of similar research work.


The Role

The main responsibilities include:

• Conduct top down research into global economic, monetary and credit conditions within the Fixed Income Group
• Engage with the Global Investment Solutions team on the research agenda and the firm wide outlook on global economic, monetary and credit conditions
• Assessment of the global and market-specific economic, monetary and credit conditions
• Reports on specific topics (as required); e.g., impact of regulation on demand for government debt, sovereign risk, industry studies, etc.
• Compilation and distribution of regular research documents outlining the top down outlook and risks for the major markets
• Meet with clients to communicate our economic view and investment strategy
• Maintenance of relevant databases and charts for internal and external use


The ideal candidate will have a track record of producing value added and thought-provoking material that is not readily available in the market through other sources. The role will not normally involve short term forecasts of economic variables. These forecasts are readily available from the market place and do not form an important part of the strategy setting process.
Requirements Experience and skills
• The candidate is probably currently working at a central bank or ministry of finance / Treasury, an economics consultancy or in the economics research department of an investment bank
• Comprehensive knowledge of global economics is key to the ability of performing the duties of the role. In depth knowledge of at least one of the following markets would be useful: UK, Eurozone, Japan, China, Emerging Asia
• The required skill set for the role includes familiarity with econometric model building and related forecasting techniques
• UBS attaches strong importance to the ability to communicate the result of research clearly and effectively in writing and orally. The ability to explain complex economic concepts briefly and concisely and apply these to the market will be essential



Education
• The successful candidate will at the minimum have a strong undergraduate degree in economics. A postgraduate degree in economics or econometrics is helpful but not required, provided that the candidate can demonstrate sufficient relevant experience.
• Additional qualifications in financial markets will be a plus.
