Role Overview

The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) consists of a team of around 45 economists and analysts. It contributes to the operational, policy and strategy work of the Bank and provides intellectual leadership on economic and financial aspects of transition in the region. Within OCE, the Research Pillar is responsible for research on critical economic issues relevant to the transition region and EBRD operations, macroeconomic analysis in support of OCE's country work, and relations with academia. It also leads the design and implementation of large-scale surveys (such as the BEEPS, BEPS, and LiTS surveys); randomised impact studies; and the production of most major external publications produced by the OCE, including the annual Transition Report.
The Economist in the Research Pillar reports to the Director of Research and plays a core role in providing intellectual leadership on their area of expertise to the rest of the Bank. They contribute to the preparation of specific products and processes under the supervision of Senior or Lead Economists, such as the production of the annual Transition Report, special OCE publications, and the management of one or more large-scale surveys (such as BEEPS, BEPS, or LiTS). Along with mentoring interns and analysts in the team, the Economist also maintains responsibilities as a research economist and represents OCE at relevant conferences and maintains links between OCE and academia.

Undertake, present, and publish high-quality academic research. Provide intellectual support inside the Bank on relevant research issues and disseminate findings through attendance at lectures and conferences.
Establish and maintain strong links with the other OCE pillars, the rest of the Bank, and outside academics. Provide intellectual support within OCE by taking part in project- or country-related discussions, if and when needed, and by supporting other OCE economists on an ad hoc basis.
Contribute to the generation of key products of the pillar, for example chapters in the Transition Report or occasional sector- or country-specific reports.
Assist in the organisation of the research seminar series and host outside experts to facilitate an effective discussion of relevant research.

Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Competencies and Personal Attributes

A diverse workforce with the right knowledge and skills enables connection with our clients, brings pioneering ideas, energy and innovation. The EBRD staff is characterised by its rich diversity of nationalities, cultures and opinions and we aim to sustain and build on this strength.
