Job Summary
Conducts independent and original research on economic policy issues. Conveys the results internally to the Research Department and Reserve Bank President and externally to the academic community and general public through published articles and presentations. Provides commentary and recommendations on current economic developments and policy issues to senior management and others. Studies developments in particular field of specialization, advises colleagues and applies developments as appropriate. May assign work and provide direction to others. The level of work is considered advanced and staff work under minimal supervision. This position has may have direct reports.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Conducts independent research on economic issues and publishes findings that influence the course of the U.S. economy, the district economy, financial markets and financial institutions; selects topics, constructs models and chooses/develops appropriate analytical methods; applies these tools in a manner expected to meet academic peer review standards
Communicates research results to various audiences including: (a) the Reserve Bank President in FOMC and other policy briefings; (b) the Federal Reserve System at System and other conferences; (c) the academic community through seminar presentations and publication of articles in scholarly journals; and (d) the business community and the community at large through presentations and the publication of articles in Economic Perspectives, the Chicago Fed Letter, Profitwise/News and Views, and business news publications
Applies highly specialized and technical research skills to the timely analysis of current economic issues for the FOMC process or other system-wide directives and requests
Manages long-term research agenda; manages short-term research projects and directs the efforts of associate economists and support analysts
Interacts with a variety of external groups in order to collect information for the FOMC review process or to provide policy expertise on issues related to community economic development; examples include surveying Senior Loan Officers at district banks on bank credit conditions, supporting regional development partnerships, attending business roundtable discussions, and attending academic conferences where new developments in economic analysis are presented and discussed
Contributes to a highly collegial research environment and stays current in theoretical and empirical developments; may include attending seminars and offering constructive comments on others' research, interviewing prospective job candidates, organizing conferences, training associate economists, and participating in other minor department management activities
Performs other duties as requested

Education and Experience
Ph.D. (or nearing completion of Ph.D.) in Economics, Finance or a closely related field
Up to 3 years of direct experience
