The economist will conduct applied research and work collaboratively with other members of our research group. This individual will have a sophisticated understanding of economic data and will help construct and the ability to execute econometric models or projections. The successful candidate will be capable of designing and managing research projects from inception to completion. He/she will co-author research reports, supervise junior research staff, oversee data collection efforts and conduct econometric analysis. Duties are performed within a team structure, but the ability to work independently is critical. This position will provide an outstanding opportunity to contribute to influential, highly visible and impactful research reports that will be of significance to policy makers, business leaders, philanthropists, the media, and the field. Excellent communication skills – both written and oral - are required.

Based in our Santa Monica office, the economist will also be directly involved in our major conferences in multiple venues. He/she will have an opportunity to interact with the world's foremost leaders in health, business, finance, philanthropy and public policy as part of preparing for and supporting panel sessions and private meetings. Candidates for this position must have the sophistication, style, maturity and interpersonal skills to deal with these constituents effectively.

Responsibilities

Work with the research team to conduct economic and statistical analysis with particular interest/expertise in chronic disease, modifying unhealthy behaviors, making the case for investment in medical research and labor economics.
Oversee research projects from inception to completion.
Author and co-author high-quality research reports, papers and articles, with special focus on recommendations that can be shared with stakeholders and disseminated to impact public policy and business practice;
Provide support to the Milken Institute's broader economic research agenda.
Act as a team player who can multitask efficiently and meet deadlines.
Lead and train fellow analysts to analyze economic and financial data; build, maintain, organize and update datasets.

Requirements

A strong background in quantitative methods: Only a Ph.D./ Master's degree in Economics will be considered.
At least 2 years (and 6 years for Master's) of related experience in applied econometrics with a focus on health economics /labor economics/economics of aging.
Solid working knowledge of SAS/STATA and MS office.
Work experience using large datasets, preferably NLSY, HRS, BRFSS, NHANES, American Community Survey and BLS data. Knowledge/Interest to conduct research both within the U.S. and other countries.
Excellent writing and oral communications skills are essential. In particular, an ability to communicate to an audience beyond the field (including leaders in policy, business, philanthropy and the media) is important for success.
Previous management/oversight experience in economics or related fields preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills is required.
