About GLA Economics
GLA Economics' analysis and advice informs key decisions at the Greater London Authority (GLA). Joining at a critical time, these roles are an opportunity to produce high-quality economic analysis to ensure that GLA strategies and projects are based on sound evidence, including London's COVID-19 Recovery Programme.

You can find out more about the work we carry out on our publications page and on the London Datastore.

Jobs descriptions
We are recruiting to fill three Economists posts: two in our Micro team and one in our Macro team. All the roles are available as permanent positions. However, we are also open to candidates interested in fixed term/secondment opportunities (minimum of 12 months).

The two micro roles will focus on analysing official statistics to understand and communicate key trends in the London labour market. As well as maintaining an up-to-date understanding of labour market information, you will be expected to develop a focus on related topics such as education and skills and long-term employment modelling.

Economist - Micro JD

The macro role will work with official statistics to monitor and communicate trends in the London economy (inputting to publications like London's Economy Today and London's Economic Outlook) as well as contributing to analysis of fiscal events and taxation and the impacts of Brexit. You will also be expected to develop skills in producing forecasts for London's economy and analysing London's tourism market.

Economist - Macro JD

You can expect to work flexibly across a variety of other topics reflecting emerging issues facing the London economy. This includes work related to London's COVID-19 recovery programme as well as topics such as productivity, sectoral studies and industrial strategy. All the roles will involve both long-term analytical projects and meeting short-term demands for information, engaging closely with economists and colleagues from across the GLA group.

At the start of your supporting statement please ensure you make clear if you wish to be considered for a role in the Micro Team, Macro Team or both.

About you
For each of these roles you will have a professional qualification in Economics, or a related degree with an analytical focus, and a proven capacity to deliver high-quality analytical projects to inform and influence policy development through evidence. You will have strong numeracy skills, ideally with experience of undertaking technical modelling. It would also be highly advantageous to have familiarity with statistical software packages such as R or Python.

We encourage applications from candidates who may have less experience in some of the required criteria – but are curious and willing to develop their skills and understanding. Gaps can be developed on-the-job and training can be made available.

If you would like to discuss these posts further, please contact Christopher Rocks at christopher.rocks@london.gov.uk

Person Specification
The Person Specification section found in each of the job descriptions outlines the full range of Technical and Behavioural criteria for these roles.
In their Supporting Statement, candidates should provide evidence of how they meet each of Technical criteria and how they meet the following Behavioural competencies:
ï‚· An ability to plan and deliver work to a high standard in a fast-moving environment (Planning and Organising)
ï‚· An ability to interpret a variety of information to understand and develop solutions to analytical problems (Problem Solving)
ï‚· An ability to analyse and integrate data from varied sources to deliver concise and insightful reports (Research and Analysis)

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and we are happy to consider flexible working arrangements. We would welcome applications from candidates who are seeking part time work as this role is open to job share.

In addition to a good salary package, we offer an attractive range of benefits including 30 days' annual leave, interest free season ticket loan, interest free bicycle loan and a career average pension scheme.
