Responsibilities

PURPOSE: BBVA Research is looking for an economist to focus on rigorous and relevant analysis to guide BBVA strategic decisions in the United States. Incumbents in the Economist job family will work with the Director – Economic Research to ensure the organization's overall success. Incumbents will develop and oversee the organizations' research activities and publications.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES for JR Economist:

Studies economic and statistical data in area of specialization.
Devises methods and procedures for collecting and processing data utilizing knowledge of available sources of data and various econometric and sampling techniques.
Reviews and analyzes economic data in order to prepare reports detailing results of investigation, and to stay abreast of economic changes.

Organizes data into report format and arranges for preparation of graphic illustrations of research findings.
Formulates recommendations, policies, or plans to aid in market interpretation or solution of economic problems.
May testify at regulatory or legislative hearings to present recommendations.
Researches and monitors economic developments that affect Compass Bank.
Individually and as part of a team, researches, writes, and edits analytical reports, briefing papers, op-eds, and other written materials as required.
Provides information and technical assistance to internal and external constituencies.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES for SR Economist:

Develop (or assist with the development of) robust economic and statistical models to support business decisions.
Prepare communication releases and presentations for BBVA stakeholders with a forward looking and strategic approach.
Collaborate with members of BBVA Research in other countries.
Perform any and all additional tasks as assigned by company management.
Work in a team environment and under pressure.
Provide creative and innovative solutions when dealing with complex situations
Follow appropriate statistical principles and methods as needed; ensuring that subsequent analysis is valid and avoids bias.
Build and maintain high quality relationships and networks that support BBVA strategic goals/objectives and commitment to society.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE Required for Jr. Economist:

Undergraduate major or minor in Economics, and at least three (3) years of professional experirence. Advanced degree in economics, public policy, or related field is strongly preferred.
Proven knowledge and expertise in economic, tax, and/or budget analysis and a willingness and ability to learn quickly subjects not already known.
Excellent writing, analytical, and quantitative skills. Strong ability to communicate technical details to lay audiences and the news media as well as technical audiences.
Ability to initiate projects and balance multiple projects at once.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong excel skills, strong analytical and research skills and project management experience
Demonstrated ability to deal with complex situations, and provide creative and innovative solution
Exhibit a professional demeanor and sound judgment when dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
Strong attention to detail and project deadlines.
Excellent written and oral communication in English.
Bilingual with the ability to speak and write in Spanish is a plus.

Additional requirements for Senior Economist:

Masters or PhD Degree in Economics.
Minimum of 1-2 years of relevant work experience in applied economic analysis/research and/or financial sector. Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in applied economic analysis/research and/or financial sector for Senior Economist II.
Interest in financial/banking organizations is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to deal with complex situations, and provide creative and innovative solutions
Strong analytical competence; not just answering the questions right but also asking the right questions.
Advance knowledge of business and statistical software applications.
Ability to adapt to changing working conditions and a wide variety of projects.
