Lecturer Position

The Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley invites applicants for a pool of temporary instructors to teach courses in Economics, should an opening arise. The pool will remain in place for two calendar years; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed (including hiring for Summer Sessions). The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. Positions may range from 16% - 100% time (one – six courses), and typically start at the beginning of the semester. The Department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching or research.

Teaching Responsibilities
The Department of Economics is seeking outstanding instructors to be appointed in the "Lecturer" title series who can teach large courses (300 or more students) in the subject areas listed below:

Core Courses
Introduction to Economics (one semester combination of Principles of Micro and Macro) Economic Analysis – Micro (Theory)
Economic Analysis – Macro (Theory)
Economic Statistics and Econometrics

Upper-Division Courses (particularly within the following areas)
Psychology and Economics Financial Economics
Public Economics
Economic Development Economic History
International Trade
International Monetary Economics Labor Economics
Health Economics

General Duties
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include (but are not limited to) managing graders and/or graduate student instructors (teaching assistants), holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website. Those teaching large courses are expected to work with, meet with, and mentor graduate student instructors.

Basic Qualifications:
The minimum qualifications required to be an applicant are the completion of all PhD degree requirements except the dissertation or equivalent at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications:
A PhD or equivalent in Economics or a related discipline is required by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with courses in Economics and a track record of excellence in teaching to a diverse undergraduate student body.

Salary
The minimum starting rate for Lecturers in Economics is $12,000 per course. This is calculated using the minimum annual salary listed on the Non-Senate Instructional Salary Scale for a six (6) course load that comes closest to $12,000/course but not lower. As of July 1, 2014, the minimum annual salary for non-senate instructors would be $72,759. This salary divided by a six course load equals $12,126/course. Some credit may be given to prior college- level teaching experience per Non-Senate guidelines (not including graduate student or Summer Session teaching).
