Manager - Economics and Disputes - Competition Economics

The highly successful E&D practice at KPMG is looking to accelerate its recent growth. The team, largely based in London but now also expanding internationally, provides economic advice to clients across a broad range of engagements.

The E&D practice spans a number of functional areas, with core skills ranging from competition economics, econometrics, regulatory strategy, cost modelling, macro to micro economics, pricing and regulatory finance and accounting, professional negligence, disputes and forensic transaction services.

Although many of our services lines work across all sectors, we also have specialist focuses on sectors including telecoms, post, energy and utilities, transport, health, professional services and lotteries and will continue to expand.

The team typically works with clients at board level, offering interesting and varied work, and the opportunity to earn substantial rewards by expanding our successful practice in the UK and across Europe.

Introduction to the team

KPMG's Competition Economics team serves a diverse international client base, advising on all aspects of competition policy across a variety of industries.
Recent and ongoing engagements include market investigations by the UK Competition Commission and Financial Conduct Authority, merger investigations by the European Commission and UK competition authorities, State Aid investigations by the European Commission, advice to companies through other inquiries under UK and European competition law and competition compliance reviews.
Our team of competition economists works closely with leading academic advisors, drawing on in-depth sector knowledge from experts within the KPMG network, to deliver high quality economic advice to our clients.

KPMG's Competition Economics team, is part of the broader Economics & Disputes ("E&D”) practice. E&D sits within KPMG Forensic, and is part of KPMG's Risk Consulting group.

Roles and Responsibilities

We are looking for highly motivated outstanding economists to join our E&D team in the area of competition economics.

Successful applicants will:

- Be a key member of our well-established team, delivering high quality economic advice to our clients on all aspects of competition policy.
- Prepare quantitative and qualitative evidence, to provide insight and value to our clients.
- Help to run projects and maintain the client relationship, with supervision from Directors and Partners, ensuring that any client work will be delivered to the highest standards in both content and form.
- Maintain a positive attitude when the team is under pressure, supporting other team members when they face challenging situations.
- Support business development activities within the team.
- Liaise regularly with the wider Economics & Disputes team in terms of lessons learned from client engagements and where good practice/methodologies could be cascaded.
- Be involved in the management and the development of the E&D team as a whole, including contributing to our recruitment efforts, performance appraisal, mentoring and thought leadership.

Qualifications and Skills

Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following qualifications and skills:

- Top academic qualifications in economics, with a focus on industrial economics and/or microeconometrics, at least at MA/MSc level (PhD desirable but not essential).
- Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- An ability to explain complex economics clearly to non-economists, and apply economic concepts and techniques to real world situations.
- Perfect command of English. Fluency in other languages desirable but not necessary.
- Experience and/or qualifications in quantitative techniques/econometrics.
- Knowledge of competition law and/or regulatory regimes.
- An ability to work to tight deadlines and budgets, on multiple projects simultaneously, and to produce deliverables of consistently high quality
- An ability to work as part of a team, managing the input of others (including more senior and more junior colleagues where appropriate)

Experience and Background

Candidates should be able to demonstrate that they have:
- Solid experience as a competition economist gained in a consulting firm, in a competition authority or in industry.
- Experience in managing the economic analysis of projects.
