Markets and Trade analyst

Chemonics International, Inc. seeks a Markets and Trade analyst with expertise in agricultural market and food security analysis. The analyst is proficient in written and spoken French to support the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) III project. The Markets and Trade Analyst will support Washington, D.C. and field office operations for the Markets and Trade (M&T) sector in West Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, and Haiti. Key duties will include preparing technical reports on agricultural commodity markets, contributing to the technical oversight of the project's analytical tools, and providing technical M&T support to FEWS NET field offices and technical partners. The Markets and Trade Analyst will be part of a close-knit team of Agricultural Economists based in Washington, D.C. The Markets and Trade Analyst will work under the supervision of the project's Markets and Trade Advisor and in close collaboration with members of the Washington, D.C., and field technical teams to:

• Provide technical oversight for the production the FEWS NET project's annual regional staple food supply and market outlook reports. Liaising with M&T staff and database manager to assure the timely publication of the Price Watch, Price Watch Annex, and Price Bulletins, monthly publications reporting on trends in staple food markets in countries monitored by FEWS NET
• Work with the Markets and Trade Advisor to provide technical oversight of the development of the project's Markets Fundamentals Reports and suite of methodologies and tools. Provide support to the development of methods and tools for effective market-based response analysis
• Liaise with the FEWS NET database manager, Markets and Trade team, and Kimetrica (a FEWS NET partner) to enhance the functionality of various data domains, including but not limited to online and offline analytical tools
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to home office and field teams on market and policy analysis relevant to food insecurity early warning and food assistance decision support. Technical assistance to the field may be done remotely or may require international travel
• Conduct literature reviews, analyze data, and draft reports on market trends and policies in close collaboration with members of the Washington, D.C. and field technical teams
• Liaise with research institutions (including, but not limited to, the World Bank, the International Food Policy Research Institute, and universities) to support commodity market-related research relevant to food security analysis and early warning
• Contribute to the content of monthly and ad-hoc decision-support products
• Assist the Markets and Trade Advisor, as needed, in implementing M&T activities for FEWS NET

Qualifications:

• Advanced degree in agricultural economics or a closely related field. Formal academic training in commodity market analysis required
• At least five years of experience in agricultural market analysis in developing countries. At least two years of field experience in one of the five FEWS NET regions preferred (Central America and the Caribbean, Southern Africa, East Africa, West Africa, and Central Asia).
• Experience using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze agricultural markets
• Experience building and using large databases of socio-economic data
• Expertise in using SPSS, STATA, SAS, or similar software
• Expertise in using reference management software (Zotero, EndNote)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to draft and present high-quality analytical documents in a clear and concise manner for a general audience
• Attention to detail is an important skill for this job
• Good organizational skills and ability to pay handle multiple tasks.
• Proven ability to work effectively within a close-knit and collaborative multidisciplinary and multicultural team.
• Preexisting permanent U.S. work authorization without sponsorship required
• This position is based in Washington, D.C. with international travel up to 25 percent of the time Chemonics will not cover relocation expenses
• Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
• Fluency in written and spoken English and French is required
