An economist to join the North America Economics research team based in New York serving a global client base. The successful candidate will become part of a top tier global bank's leading Economics group headed by Willem Buiter, one of the world's most highly regarded macro economists.
The successful candidate will be expected to analyze and communicate clearly relevant conclusions concerning the evolution of key economic, financial, and policy trends. Such results should be directed toward clarifying implications and sharpening insights about the importance of these developments for our clients around the world.
Specific duties include (but are not limited to) the following:
Contribute to the creation of analytical insights and forecasts of Citi's North America Economics team.
Monitor developing trends in various sectors, and forecast changes in business and financial conditions as well as in and underlying behavioral relationships.
Use relevant advanced econometric and modelling techniques to develop and test hypotheses about changing economic and financial behavior that may influence trading and portfolio strategies used by Citi's clients.
Prepare reports and presentations for internal and external distribution.
Brief Citi's sales force and institutional clients about the team's research findings.
Support Citi's clients through individual meetings, presentations, seminars and conferences.
Our work is fast-paced and intellectually challenging. We interact frequently with internal and external clients from all sectors, as well as industry regulators supervisors. In light of rapidly changing financial and economic conditions, the Economics team's insights and policy positions are important and sought-after inputs that influence a wide range of business needs.
Qualifications
Ideally, the candidate will be a macro economist with a number of years (approximately 2-5) of practical work experience either in the banking industry, the corporate sector, the public sector or academia. Other specific qualifications include the following:
An advanced postgraduate degree (PhD., MPhil, or similar ABD), in Economics, Public Policy, or allied sciences (with heavy emphasis on macroeconomics and advanced econometrics) is required. However, for exceptional candidates, we will consider a strong track record of relevant work experience as well. Relevant regulatory licenses may need to be acquired.
Evidence of professional expertise analyzing fundamental drivers and trends of the US economy and the financial system is critical. Previous econometric modeling experience would also desirable but not required for this position.
A global perspective (and evidence of how this has been achieved / applied) in examining the US economy would be desirable, but not necessary.
The capability of managing multiple tasks simultaneously is key, given the broad nature of the role.
Due to the global nature of Citi's business and its clients, a willingness and capacity to travel will be an important consideration.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven ability to produce results quickly and work independently. It is vital that the successful candidate be able to communicate clearly, write succinct high-quality analytical reports, and produce engaging presentation materials on relevant economic topics. Demonstrated ability to write and speak clearly and concisely (in English) cannot be over-emphasized. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are mandatory because of the client facing nature of the role.
