The Australian Energy Market Commission is an independent, national body responsible to the Council of Australian Governments. It is the statutory rule maker for the energy market, and provides market development advice to Federal, State and Territory Governments. With the energy sector facing a period of significant change, the AEMC has particular strategic focus on strengthening consumer participation while continuing to promote competitive retail markets, promoting the development of efficient gas markets, and ensuring that market and regulatory arrangements encourage efficient investment and flexibility, in the long term interests of consumers.

Reporting to the senior management team, each Director will lead the development of project direction and strategies to inform decision making for reviews, advice and rule changes. Directors are expected to provide a wide ranging perspective, support the strategic direction for policy direction, contribute to organizational strategy, guide complex project planning and delivery, and provide leadership to multiple teams to manage performance and deliver programmes of work. Directors also play a key role in representing the Commission through engagement with a broad range of stakeholders including Governments, industry groups, regulatory bodies, and business and consumer representatives.

Candidates will need to bring substantial experience in specialist policy, law, research, technical, consulting and / or regulatory roles. This should be supported by a sound understanding of energy markets or similarly regulated utilities or markets. In particular, knowledge of the gas market in a commercial setting is desirable. Candidates will need to demonstrate experience in developing and leading staff, as well as project leadership capability to guide the efficient and effective delivery of multiple complex projects; high level communication skills to develop, review and present information in a range of forums; proven analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to build collaborative relationships.
