Grade 7 (Oxford): £30,434 - £37,394 with a discretionary range to £40,847 p.a.

A major joint research programme on urbanisation in developing economies, with particular reference to Africa, has been launched at Oxford's Department of Economics and LSE's Spatial Economics Research Centre with support from the World Bank. Professors Tony Venables, Paul Collier (Oxford) and Vernon Henderson (LSE) are seeking to recruit up to two postdoctoral research economists. This will involve conceptual and econometric work on the overall urbanisation process in developing countries and on the internal development of cities, in particular large African cities. There will be intensive use of satellite data (to classify land use), night lights data, demographic census data, DHS data, survey data, mapping and planning data. The programme offers outstanding opportunities to contribute to cutting edge research in the field, based in two of Europe's leading social science research and training institutions.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Economics (or nearly completed) with relevant specialist knowledge and the ability to undertake research and produce papers and reports. You will be examining patterns of urban growth across cities in different developing countries, with a special focus on the internal development of African cities. Experience is required in working with large datasets and using statistical methods to identify causal effects of policies and other phenomena using demographic, economic, satellite and infrastructure data.

This is a full-time position, fixed-term for up to 2 years from 1 September 2015.

The recruitment and selection process is being jointly handled by Oxford and LSE and any final employment offers will be from one of the two institutions. The LSE post is a Band 6: £33,450 - £40,462 p.a. Discretionary contribution possible to £43,537 p.a. according to qualifications and experience.
