The Centre for Business Research (CBR) has an opportunity for an economist or other social scientist with statistical training to work with Professor Simon Deakin and an international team of researchers on an ESRC and DFID funded project, concerning the role of labour law regulation in poverty alleviation in low and middle income countries. The project is led by the CBR in collaboration with Monash University and the International Labour Office (ILO), Geneva.

The postholder will carry out econometric analysis of the relationship between labour law and economic development. Data on labour law will be drawn from the CBR Labour Regulation Index, which measures the strength of worker protective labour laws in over 80 developed and developing countries, for periods of up to 45 years from the 1970s to the present day. This dataset is currently under construction by legal members of the project team and will be completed by the autumn of 2014. An early version of the dataset may be consulted online: http://www.cbr.cam.ac.uk/research/projects/project2-20output.htm.
Country-level data on economic development and growth will be drawn from a number of sources including IMF, World Bank, OECD and ILO datasets measuring GDP, employment, unemployment, and inequality, as well as the Human Development Index. Relevant firm-level datasets will also be used.

The post-holder's main responsibility, working with the principal investigator and other members of the project team, will be to conduct econometric analysis of the relationship between labour law, economic development and poverty alleviation. The post-holder should be experienced in relevant aspects of panel data and time series econometrics, including vector-autoregression and vector error correction techniques, and be familiar with handling cross-national and firm-level data. They should have completed, or should have made very substantial progress towards completing, a Ph.D. or equivalent in economics or one of the other principal social science disciplines (sociology, law, management, or political science), with a specialisation in statistical analysis involving time-series and panel data techniques. They should also have an interest in and knowledge of the fields of labour studies and/or development studies

The post-holder will be based in the Centre for Business Research (CBR) in central Cambridge. For more information about the CBR visit our website at: www.cbr.cam.ac.uk.

Appointment at Research Fellow level is normal for a successful applicant who has a Ph.D. at the time they take up the employment, and at Junior Research Fellow level otherwise. In the latter case, promotion to Research Fellow is possible following completion of the Ph.D.

The post is available for one year from 1 September 2014 or a later date by agreement.

Salary will be : in the range £24,289- £27,318 per annum for a Junior Research Fellow appointment or £28,132 - £36,661 per annum for a Research Fellow. The starting salary will be depending on qualifications and experience.
