NERA Economic Consulting Economics logo

NERA Economic Consulting
Berlin - Germany
S: Competitive

NERA Economic Consulting is a global firm of experts dedicated to applying economic, finance, and quantitative principles to complex business and legal challenges. For over half a century, NERA’s economists have been creating strategies, studies, reports, expert testimony, and policy recommendations for regulatory authorities, governments and the world’s leading law firms and corporations. NERA serves clients from over 20 offices across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Competition work consists of economic research typically arising in the context of (alleged) competition law infringements and the review of mergers and acquisitions. Alleged competition law infringements of EU or national competition laws, may involve price fixing or the abuse of dominance. In these matters, NERA’s experts work in a variety of capacities, including conducting empirical analyses to determine whether economic evidence supports the claims of either side, and estimating damages caused by the violations.

The review of mergers and acquisitions involves conducting economic research to assess whether a proposed transaction is likely to increase market power and harm consumers. In these cases, NERA experts work with merging parties, the European Commission, national competition authorities or other regulators to quantify the likely competitive effects of a transaction. This work can occur as part of a review process conducted by the regulatory authorities or in court.

NERA’s experts also advise on competition policy and regularly provide input to the development of guidelines and the general competition policy debate.

We currently have a need for a Research Officer/Analyst as part of our European Competition practice based in Berlin. NERA's European Competition practice has advised on numerous high profile European, German and French, as well as other national cases including, but not limited to, mergers and acquisitions, cartels, damage quantification, abuse of dominance, vertical and horizontal agreements and state aid.

Responsibilities may include designing and building quantitative models and applying econometric analysis to economic and financial data; reviewing, summarising, and analysing industry trends and competitor and academic research; creating presentation materials; drafting memos and expert reports; managing large data sets and writing programmes to implement complex analyses; and participating in client meetings and conference calls.

Requirements:
A Masters or PhD in economics with strong analytical skills and an exceptional academic record from a top tier university.
A high level of technical ability using Excel.
Coursework and/or experience in regression analysis/econometrics and an ability to use statistical and/or mathematical software (for example Stata or Mathematica) would be a plus.
Qualified candidates must be detail-oriented and have the ability to think analytically and critically.
Excellent German and English oral and written communication skills.

The ideal candidate would have prior economic and/or competition consulting experience. Additional fluency in European languages, specifically French, Spanish or Italian would be an advantage.
