Senior Economist - Economics for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international organisation promoting global monetary and financial stability and is a bank for central banks. We are looking for a Senior Economist to undertake high-quality research and policy analysis on monetary, macroeconomic and financial stability issues in Latin America and support the BIS's cooperative activities with central banks in the region. The role is based primarily in Mexico City, but the successful candidate will be expected to spend a period of time working at the BIS head office in Basel.

Key responsibilities:

Conduct research on topics of interest to central banks in the Americas and disseminate this research through presentations and publications.
Contribute to the Bank's analysis of emerging market issues, with a focus on Latin America.
Keep Senior Management updated on economic and financial developments in Latin America.
Contribute to the implementation of central bank research and cooperative activities in the Americas region, for example through conferences, meetings and joint projects.
Establish and develop contacts with senior officials at central banks and other financial institutions in the region; represent the BIS at regional meetings and conferences.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

PhD in economics or finance from a university of international standing or equivalent professional experience acquired over several years.
Excellent knowledge of financial and monetary economics including several years' experience analysing such topics at a central bank, finance ministry, international institution, university or financial institution. Experience of working on financial stability issues desirable.
Extensive knowledge of emerging markets, with a focus on Latin American and Caribbean economies desirable.
Strong organisation and networking skills with ability to coordinate international meetings and conferences and interact at a senior level with central bank officials.
Proven track record in conducting research, writing reports and presenting complex topics in a clear, non-technical fashion.
Experience using statistical and econometric software.
Self-starter, intellectually curious, team player able to apply tools used in economic analysis to a range of topics.
Excellent command of written and spoken English, including strong drafting skills.
Fluency in Spanish or capacity to acquire working knowledge within a reasonable period of time is desirable.
Willingness to travel both within the Americas region and globally as required.
