Wessex Water has a reputation as a top performing and progressive water and sewerage company that aims to lead the industry forward in delivering better outcomes for customers and the environment. The water industry is at the beginning of a period of significant change where it is clear that there will be a greater use of market mechanisms to meet the sector's challenges.
The Economic Regulation department is looking to fill the new position of Senior Economist. The holder of this role will help shape and detail the company's approach towards the development of these new markets - engaging and influencing external stakeholders and policy makers so that the future industry model is best placed to help us meet the challenges that we face. They will also manage the company's economic research programme, in particular in the lead-up to future price and service negotiations with stakeholders, ensuring our strategic business planning is based on sound economic evidence.
Applications are sought from motivated individuals with excellent communication skills that have proven expertise in economic analysis within the context of a regulated industry. Experience of transitions to market based approaches in a regulated sector would be an advantage.

Your responsibilities will include:
* Developing detailed and technical potential new models and approaches for setting prices and/or revenues within the wholesale water and sewerage sector that sufficiently reward the company for the services provided to customers and the environment and the risks it is bearing
* Influencing key external policy makers within regulators and in government departments so that the sector's reform agenda is shaped to deliver good outcomes for Wessex, its customers and the environment
* Managing the company's economic research programme so that the company's strategic planning is based on sound analysis at best value
* Undertaking analysis and providing advice for all areas of regulatory economics that affect Wessex Water
* Engaging positively with external stakeholders on issues related to regulatory economics, including regulators, consumer representatives and government departments

The ideal candidate will have:

* Excellent communication skills - verbal and written
* At least 5 years proven experience within an economic consultancy, economic regulator or organisation subject to economic regulation
* A degree in economics or a further professional qualification and/or a master's degree in a subject related to economics or water
* Experience of transitions to market based approaches in a regulated sector would be an advantage.
* First-hand experience of business planning and regulated price controls would also be an advantage
* Strong IT skills with a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
* Self-motivated and able to plan own workload
* High standards of attention to detail and organisational abilities

You must be able to provide proof of your eligibility to work in the UK and proof of skills and qualifications gained.
