Practice Area

We have a dedicated team of economists who work with our technical specialists to provide consultancy support and analysis to policy makers in the UK and overseas. Our analysis is supported by a detailed understanding of the businesses and technologies concerned, ensuring our work is grounded by a practical appreciation of how markets work in practice. We have a proven track record in this area, applying techniques such as input-output, cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit analysis to support decision-making across a range of policy issues.

Vacancy Information

We have recently secured a number of large, long term contracts in the energy and climate change policy area. To support our growth we seek a consultant with experience in the economic analysis of energy and climate change policies. Ideal candidates will have relevant technical and analytical expertise, and the flexibility to work across a range of subject areas.

We are particular interesting in candidates with experience in:
• Economic impact assessment, including impacts on competitiveness and employment
• Financial instruments, including those aimed at renewables and energy efficiency
• Evaluation, including international energy or climate change policies and programmes

The individual will, working with a team of policy analysts and technical specialists, win, manage and deliver environmental policy contracts for a range of clients.

Key accountabilities:

Senior Consultants in Ricardo-AEA will lead technical projects and bids and provide support to the development of more junior colleagues, whilst continuing their own personal development. In addition, Senior Consultants will be able to demonstrate:

• Project Management and Consultancy skills – take full responsibility for the management of projects, leading and delivering complex pieces of environmental policy research and consultancy;
o Build and maintain professional relationships with customers and develop solutions to customer problems;
• Business winning - Contribute to business development activities, by leading small or less complex bids, including developing positive relationships with customers and potential customers
o Lead and provide written content and technical analysis for use in the preparation of bids and reports, including detailed proposals and expressions of interest and present at interview;
o Develop follow on work and new opportunities as they arise from existing work;
• Technical skills - Support the growth of the Ricardo-AEA's economics team, working closely with technical consultants in relevant practice areas;
o Recognised by clients as a leading technical expert in a particular field;
o Use quantitative and qualitative analytical methods to assess the potential economic impacts of environmental policies and strategies;
• Leadership and team working - Provide support and guidance to less experienced members of staff; able to effectively lead the work of others and help develop skills through effective delegation

Essential Experience:

• A Degree in economics or an equivalent qualification
• Experience of energy or climate change policy consultancy or policy delivery within the public sector;
• Detailed and up to date knowledge of relevant energy or climate change policies at a national and/or international level
• Experience of using economics analysis tools such as cost effectiveness analysis, cost benefit analysis and input-output analysis
• Strong project management experience, including projects and proposals
• Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including good report and bid writing skills and the ability to deliver professional presentations
• Highly numerate, logical and analytical
• Good IT skills
