The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision the Chief of the Economic and Environmental Statistics Unit and the overall direction of the Chief of the Statistics Division, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:

• Contributes to organizing, designing, planning and carrying out the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of environmental statistics data by selecting and implementing methods for data collection, validation, and processing for incorporation into databases.
• Participates in the design, implementation and management of environment statistics database(s) by providing guidance to database developers and data compilers on statistical and environmental aspects.
• Provides training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information on environment statistics and accounts.
• Participates in the development or revision of international standards on concepts, definitions, and classifications in environmental statistics and accounts by performing methodological research.
• Prepares draft technical documents and reports for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings.
• Supports the environmental statistics work of the Statistical Conference of the Americas.
• Organizes and participates in seminars, working groups and expert group meetings in environment statistics as a technical resource person.
• Develops and manages technical cooperation projects.
• Provides, as supervisor, guidance and training to general service staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in statistics, economics, environmental studies or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of environmental statistical data or related area is required. Experience with conceptual and methodological issues related to environmental statistics is required. Experience in environmental accounts and/or national accounts along with experience in servicing inter-governmental processes on statistical development is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written Spanish and English are required.
