Job Description

Pantheon Macroeconomics seeks a UK/Europe Economist to help establish new services and build a practice serving the company's substantial global client base, which includes major international banks, asset managers, and hedge funds. This is a prime opportunity to step out of the confines of economist roles in investment banking or asset management.

You will produce content for our new UK and Eurozone services, covering both the key short-term data and the broader themes, and reporting to the senior economists responsible for the publications. You will also prepare brief notes for clients, released immediately after major data releases, evaluating the emerging information flow with respect to both your forecasts and the consensus view. In time, expansion of the team could allow for greater country specialization but a key initial requirement is that you are familiar with developments across the UK and Eurozone. In addition, knowledge of non-Eurozone economies in Europe would be a distinct advantage.

Based in our office in Newcastle, UK, you will need to build relationships with clients around the world, so significant travel will in due course be an essential element of the job. While travelling, you will need to continue producing your research, so you need to be organized, flexible and adaptable.

The world of independent economic research is very different from the institutional environment. You need to be willing to take clear positions, which may differ substantially from the consensus, and to defend them. Your writing must be clear, concise and provocative, and supported by data. You need to be (nearly) as interested in building a successful business as you are in economics. If you want to write 40-page reports full of equations and footnotes, this is not the job for you.

Position Requirements

At least two years' experience covering the UK and Eurozone economies, preferably in a deadline-driven private sector environment.

A first degree in Economics or Economics with a finance/banking/accounting minor, though a higher degree is preferred.

Citizenship of an EU country or permanent legal permission to live and work in the UK.

Fluency in oral and written English. You will be expected to make media appearances.

Excellent presentation skills.
