Barclays Capital Inc. seeks a VP, Andean Economist for its New York, NY location.
Duties: Analyze economic and political fundamentals of Andean, Central American, and Caribbean regions, focusing on Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador. Publish in-depth research reports analyzing economic performance of Latin American ("LATAMâ€) countries, predicting market trends, and analyzing political events and economic factors impacting markets, and present and discuss analysis with external corporate and institutional client investors. Formulate and present views on macroeconomic topics and covered markets in the media. Analyze economic and financial models to estimate global aggregates including manufacturing confidence and industrial production. Build and implement quantitative macroeconomic forecast models using Bloomberg, eViews, and Excel. Review and assess financial forecast modeling results in order to formulate investment strategies for clients. Based on economic analyses, advise internal Sales and Trading teams on relative value among various asset classes, currencies, and maturities. Travel to Latin America with investors to meet policy makers, local political and economic analysts, and key business leaders.
Requirements:
Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Economics, Economic Policy Management, Finance, or closely related field plus five (5) years of experience as an Economist covering Latin America for financial services or related role. Demonstrated experience must include: Using Bloomberg, Excel, and eViews to conduct economic analysis and research for LATAM markets; Analyzing political and economic performance indicators to assess market trends to formulate investment strategies; Using econometric software and techniques including time series and VAR to conduct quantitative research and build macroeconomic forecast models; and Interacting with LATAM policy makers, local political and economic analysts, media, and key stakeholders. Must have knowledge of Andean, Central American, and Caribbean macroeconomic and political dynamics, including idiosyncratic factors, fiscal institution frameworks, electoral systems, and economic variables. FINRA Series 7 and 63 certifications required within six (6) months of hire. Up to 5% fully reimbursed business travel to Latin America required. 40 hrs/wk. Barclays is an EEO/AA employer.
