MIgration in the Western Balkans: What do We Know?

Western Balkans Migration Network
Sarajevo - Bosnia and Herzegovina
19th May 2017 - 20th May 2017

The Western Balkans Migration Network, in cooperation with the International Burch University (IBU), is organizing 2nd Annual Conference in Sarajevo on 18-20 May 2017. The conference will be hosted by the Center for Development Evaluation and Social Science Research (CDESS), which is the Network’s coordinating institution.

The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars and policy makers from the Western Balkans in order to create forum for exchange of knowledge and discussion of the issues that surround migration research and policy, to challenge existing models and discourses of migration, to address current policy challenges, and to offer solutions for more human treatment of migrants and better utilization of human mobility. Although the regional focus of the conference is on the Western Balkans, we encourage submissions and participation by scholars and practitioners working in other regions as well, since their experience may be very beneficial for our region.

The conference will start with the Plenary session, with keynote speeches by distinguished scholars in migration studies. The rest of the conference will be composed of a series of thematic panels, with several research papers presentations, one presentation by invited practitioner (government institutions, NGO, international organization, …), followed by a discussion of the issues raised at the panel. The official language of the conference is English.

The conference has a multidisciplinary approach and intends to bring together scholars from a broad range of disciplines including anthropology, demography, economics, law, psychology, sociology, geography, development studies, health sciences, political science, international relations, and other related disciplines with a focus on human mobility. Inter-disciplinary research and comparative perspectives are particularly encouraged. Possible topics include: migration and development; effect of migration on poverty and inequality; remittances; social remittances; diaspora externalities; migration and institutional changes; migration and demographic changes; migration and urbanization; brain drain/gain; labour market and mobility of labour; forced migration; migration and security; current “refugee crisis”; irregular migration and trafficking; internal migration.
