Company Description

Bella Research Group is a boutique advisory group focusing on the needs of the private capital industry, whether investors in venture capital and private equity funds, general partners in these groups, or policymakers who interact with these sectors. With a small, dedicated, and expert team led by Dr. Josh Lerner from Harvard Business School, it focuses on high value-added projects.

Job Description: Analyst

Bella Research Group analysts engage in a broad range of research related to private equity, venture capital, and innovation. Analysts work in a supportive team environment to produce strategic reviews, economic research projects, government policy reports, and training sessions. They perform quantitative, data-intensive analysis, explore academic and industry literature, conduct interviews, and prepare case studies. Previous projects on which analysts contributed include:

• a risk capital program evaluation for a global development finance institution;
• a series of investment profiles and working papers for an emerging market private equity firm;
• strategic recommendations for the corporate VC units of two multi-billion-dollar companies;
• performance reviews of private equity firms; and
• an evaluation of venture capital interest in space enterprise with NASA.

Bella offers analysts the opportunity to explore the notoriously opaque private equity industry. Beyond working with Dr. Josh Lerner, named one of the most influential people in private equity, and Ann Leamon, author of 125 HBS case studies, analysts also work with private equity investors themselves.

Location: Salem, MA

Qualifications

Basic qualifications for the researcher position include:

• An undergraduate (or master's) degree in Economics or a related field with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Ideal candidates for the Bella Research Group analyst position:

• Have strong writing skills. Analysts draft professional quality material under time constraints.
• Are team players. Analysts must enjoy working on projects in a collaborative environment.
• Know how to “dig deep.” Analysts synthesize large amounts of information to offer a thorough overview of a range of topics. The value-add on many projects stems from the use of a variety of sources to present a clear picture—from general context to fine detail—on a given issue.
• Are creative thinkers. Bella projects are open-ended in nature and often are completed without specific guidelines. Analysts should therefore be prepared to help develop methodologies and offer feedback on a broad range of subjects.
• Are comfortable with databases/statistical programs. Analysts navigate academic journals and private equity databases to find specific articles and data of interest. Experience with statistical programs (such as Stata or R) is preferred.
• Enjoy learning. Bella launches analysts into the world of private equity and will often ask analysts to write pieces on which they have minimal prior knowledge.
