Associate Director Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE)

The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Associate Director (Academic Coordinator II). The Associate Director (AD) works with the Director in developing short and long-range plans, and has primary responsibility for developing and implementing programs to carry out these plans, including conferences, funded and unfunded research initiatives, an internal grant-making program, communications initiatives (including web and social media), and coordination with IRLE's various constituent research centers. The AD works with the Director to develop IRLE's research agenda and to engage faculty affiliates and IRLE staff in pursuit of this agenda. The AD works with faculty and researchers to launch new programs and centers including facilitating communication among potential collaborators, identifying program resources and constraints, making recommendations and implementing program activities. The anticipated start date is July 2016, but is negotiable.

The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) is an "Organized Research Unit" of the University of California at Berkeley, founded in 1945 as the Institute for Industrial Relations. The mission of the Institute is to promote policy-relevant research in the fields of labor and employment at Berkeley and throughout the University of California. It does this through three primary mechanisms: providing services (e.g., research administration, IT support, library, and communications) to faculty and students working in the areas of labor and employment, broadly defined; administering an internal faculty grant program to directly support research; and conducting its own research activities, both in collaboration with faculty and independently, through its professional and research staff. These last are conducted primarily through a number of research centers within IRLE, including the Center for Labor Research and Education (also known as the Labor Center), the Center for Public Employment Research, the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, and the Center for Wage and Employment Dynamics. In addition, IRLE runs a thriving Visiting Scholars Program, publishes the widely respected academic journal, Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, and houses a research library on work, organizations and labor issues.

The IRLE has an annual budget of approximately $6M and employs approximately 50 people, consisting of academics, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students and administrative staff. It also has dozens of affiliated faculty from a wide variety of disciplinary departments and professional schools at UC Berkeley.

IRLE's Director is a 50% FTE senior/tenured faculty member, and is responsible for providing the overall direction and long-range planning for the Institute. The AD is a member of the Institute's executive management team, and focuses primarily on programmatic activities such as planning and implementation of new and existing academic activities. S/he also assists the Director in providing substantive oversight to the IRLE research centers and programs, including planning and development; assessment and evaluation of activities and constituency needs; conducting quality control; and ensuring IRLE's compliance with federal, state, UC and funding agencies' regulations and requirements. S/he will have supervisory responsibilities and will be responsible for overseeing the hiring and merit review processes for academic and research staff. The AD will also assist with reviewing and approving requests for Visiting Scholar appointments.

The AD works with the Director and Assistant Director to oversee a complex budget consisting of operational funds, contracts/grants, endowments, revenue and gift funds. Working with affiliated faculty, the AD facilitates efforts to bring extramural research support to IRLE. S/he oversees the approval process for research grants and principal investigator status and helps manage relations with Campus Shared Services and the Sponsored Projects Office. The AD is a key contact with outside funding agencies, sponsors and outside entities interested in the work of IRLE.

The AD is expected to provide service to the University by serving on committees and advisory boards. S/he is responsible for providing narrative reports of IRLE's activities to the Institute's Advisory Committee and the Vice Chancellor for Research. The IRLE's primary vehicles for communication to its constituents are the IR Journal, the website, eNews and social media. The Associate Director provides oversight and content for these communications.

The AD's primary responsibilities relate to the direction of the Institute. However, depending on the applicant's experience and interests, the position may combine this with independent scholarly research, either on the AD's own agenda or as part of IRLE collaborative research initiatives.
