Bar Standards Board
London - United Kingdom
S: £308 per day/£154 per half d

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers and their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting education and training requirements, setting standards, authorising organisations, monitoring the service provided, and handling complaints. Barristers work at the heart of our justice system so BSB's mission is fundamentally important to the maintenance of the rule of law. It is an exciting time at the organisation as we embark on a new strategy to continue to regulate in the public interest, support those we regulate to face the future, and ensure there is a strong and sustainable regulator for the Bar.

As part of its agreed new governance structure, we want to develop an Advisory Pool of Experts (APEX) to provide advice and support for our policy development. We want to engage a range of people, from all kinds of backgrounds, who are experts in their respective fields to help us.

So why would you be interested in doing this?

We're offering a flexible way of providing input on big, interesting topics in policy development, rather than requiring a fixed amount of input per month. We'll recognise your appointment and your expertise by publishing details of APEX members on our website and telling people when you've contributed to our work. You'll be paid for your time. You'll become part of a group of experts from a range of different specialisms, with regular opportunities to come together and learn. You'll be able to discuss issues in a robust way with our staff, our Board, other experts and often our other stakeholders too. You'll have the opportunity to make a difference, at an early stage, in how policy develops in the legal sector. There's a lot going on so there are plenty of big, complex issues to get involved with.

We seek a competition expert to advise us on the promotion of competition within the legal services market. The successful candidate will have experience of working with public or private bodies and/or regulators to promote competition within markets.

If this appeals to you, please consider applying. Please note that we also have six vacancies available in the fields of: Economics; Equality and diversity; Higher education; Insurance; Regulatory policy and theory; and Regulatory risk.

APEX members will enter into a consultancy agreement for services with the BSB, and will not be employed by us. The agreements will not guarantee a particular level of work, but will be for up to 10 days' worth of time per year. Our day and half day rates are: £308 per day and £154 per half-day, plus expenses as permitted by our expenses policy.

Details of the selection criteria and competencies for all of the APEX roles are given in the candidate brief available on our website.

For more information on the above position or any of the other positions, including how to apply, please visit our website: https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/media-centre/press-releases-and-news/experts-needed/

If you would like to discuss any of the positions in more detail, please contact Amanda Thompson, Director for Governance Reform on 020 7611 1371.

Closing date: Monday 15 August 2016, 9:00am.

The BSB aims to recruit talented candidates and values diversity in background, skills and experience. We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all applicants irrespective of race, sex, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, maternity or pregnancy, marital or civil partnership status or gender re-assignment.
